About the job
In this role, you will:
• organize and compile research and monitoring data from multiple sources
• ensure a high standard of data quality control during data collection and entry
• conduct a wide range of wildlife and environmental sampling procedures as needed to support delivery of the wild pig monitoring project objectives
• use biological/technical expertise to assist in program delivery and provide logistical support for technical research programs
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You are willing to be vaccinated for rabies.
• You are capable of working in inclement weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, cold).
• You can be available to travel extensively for long periods of time during research projects throughout the province of Ontario.
Scientific expertise:
• You have demonstrated knowledge of wildlife research and management techniques and principles to conduct wildlife and habitat surveys.
• You have work experience and the ability to identify plant and terrestrial vertebrate wildlife species based on morphology and other cues.
• You have proven experience capturing, immobilizing and handling wild animals to collect biological samples (i.e. teeth, blood, oral and glandular swabs, DNA etc.)
Technical knowledge and skills:
• You have experience in basic analysis, display of spatial and tabular data including demonstrated data management skills.
• You have experience with data collection to ensure it is collected accurately and securely on data sheets or electronic devices (i.e. data loggers, trail cameras, GPS).
• You have knowledge of navigation procedures to work in remote field settings using a compass, Global Position System (GPS) locator and maps.
Communication and interpersonal skills:
• You have well developed written communications skills to contribute to progress reports, project summaries and technical reports.
• You have well developed communication skills to assist with presentations at local meetings and/or answer public inquiries relating to the research program.
• You have interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within your research team.
• You can tactfully liaise with local residents, government officials or others encountered during execution of field or lab work.
Computer skills:
• You have demonstrated experience working with computer software used in word processing and data entry and management and preliminary data summary and analysis.
• You have experience using software to work with spreadsheets and databases.
• You have basic knowledge of GIS and working with spatial data.
