Join Our Team
We are seeking a Assistant Health Care Manager with strong management and leadership skills to join our team at the Monteith Correctional Complex. You will have an opportunity to work within a multi-disciplinary team and assist in the oversight and delivery of patient-centred health care services to offenders. (Health care services are provided 24 hours per day, 7 days per week).

About the job

In this role, you will:

• Assist in the development, implementation, review and evaluation of health care programs and services to ensure high standards are maintained, and coordinate health care services and programs with other discipline
• Assist in the development, planning, implementation and delivery of health services education programs for offenders and staff
• Supervise a team of nurses in the provision of health care services to ensure a safe environment for both offenders and staff
• Supervise medical clerks by assigning duties, checking quality of work, and ensuring records are properly maintained to standards
• Provide coaching and counselling to staff, and report inability to meet College of Nurses of Ontario standards
• Supervise the maintenance, distribution and security of all medications, including narcotic and controlled drugs, as well as equipment, medical and treatment supplies
• Monitor budget allotments and maintain equipment inventories

Mandatory requirements

• You are a Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario

Leadership, Management and Organizational Skills

• You have administrative and leadership skills to ensure efficient and effective administration of health care programs and services
• You can ensure professional standards are met by developing, maintaining and evaluating procedures and methods for the delivery of health care services
• You can lead the development and improvement of health care services and programs
• You can provide supervision, mentoring and coaching to a team of nurses and medical clerks

Specialized Knowledge

• You have knowledge of nursing administration, and health care programs and operations
• You have knowledge of health care professional regulatory bodies, practices and standards to ensure compliance, and you can interpret relevant legislation (e.g., Regulated Health Care Professions Act, Health Care Consent Act, Mental Health Act, etc.)
• You can acquire knowledge of correctional philosophies, policies and procedures as they relate to health care services in a secured correctional institution
• You have a good understanding of emergency response procedures

Relationship Management and Communication Skills

• You have interpersonal and communication skills to respond to service delivery issues with offenders and their families, community agencies and organizations
• You can provide advice on offender needs to medical practitioners, and discuss medical issues with offender family members
• You can liaise effectively with community partners, such as mental health centers, public health departments, private physicians/specialists, and hospitals

Evaluation and Analytical Skills

• You can maintain records and statistics to identify trends that have critical health care service delivery, policy and planning implications
• You can evaluate and ensure professional health care standards and procedures are provided and maintained
• You can assess risks and make sound decisions on continued health care and treatment needs
