About the job

The Ontario Science Centre's Host Program requires a Group Leader to assist the manager in the planning, development and operation of the activities of the Host group, by providing leadership to the Hosts in co-ordinating the development and delivery of hall hosting, demonstrations, workshops and programs and related materials to ensure the smooth delivery of quality programming. As necessary, the Group Leader will present demonstrations, workshops and participate in the interpretation of exhibits.

Under the supervision of the manager, the incumbent will actively participate in the training and coaching of Hosting staff and students and co-ordinate Host staff during public programs. Administrative duties associated with the day to day operations of the Host program are required, including but not limited to staff scheduling, attendance, daily operational planning.

Mandatory requirements

• This position requires proficiency in English, as well as oral and written French at the advanced level

Leadership Skills

• Demonstrated supervisory experience working in a frontline customer service environment within science/education/cultural enterprise, and/or as a tinkerer/maker
• Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to coach, motivate, and develop staff, while maintaining a cohesive team environment
• Knowledge of training/development and facilitation techniques

Organizational and Analytical Skills

• Proven ability to multi-task and to work under pressure, and demonstrated initiative and adaptability
• Experience with coordinating/scheduling staff
• Demonstrates problem solving and critical thinking skills and ability to react quickly and appropriately to issues and complaints
• Ability to solve unique problems in a fast-paced environment
• Capacity to innovate and come up with creative solutions
• Knowledge of computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, data management, and internet to plan, research and prepare materials

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills in order to interpret complex scientific and technical information into easily understood demonstration, workshops and programs.
• Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a team and across departments
• Flexibility in relating to diverse audiences and levels of understanding of science and technology

Customer & Front-line Service Skills

• Proven ability to deliver dynamic customer service and visitor care, customizing visitor experiences and proactively meeting customers' needs, especially with families and/or children
• Ability to assess situations, make sound decisions and exercise diplomatic customer service tactics in a busy environment.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations with sound judgment
