About the job

In this role, you will:

• provide GIS expertise and related design, construction, and training support services to the Regional Manager and staff
• design and construct mineral resource assessment maps, graphs, and other digital and hard-copy products, electronically-derived maps for land use planning purposes, and reports, posters, displays, and presentations
• compile geoscience data, information, and images, entering and verifying information in digital databases, and provide support and maintenance of the RGP Intranet and Internet websites

What you bring to the team


GIS/Geomatics knowledge:

• thorough knowledge of GIS technology (e.g. ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcInfo) to provide GIS-related products, services and training to staff
• knowledge of Geomatics (GIS, cartography, GPS) theories and principles and knowledge of digital data management, data modeling and data structure to design data management processes, analyze and research geoscience data problems and develop digital geoscience databases

Communication skills:

• strong communication and consultation skills to tactfully and diplomatically provide detailed information and instructions, deal with confidential information, and respond to client requests and queries
• ability to participate in the preparation or review of internal/external technical summaries, reports, maps or digital geoscience data sets
• interpersonal skills to participate effectively in a team-oriented work environment to contribute to the objectives of the team and share technical ideas openly

Technical expertise:

• knowledge of data exchange principles, and common data exchange formats/language (e.g. xml, html, kml) to ensure high quality geoscience data are available to staff and clients in widely used formats
• knowledge of common scripting languages to design program-specific GIS and data manipulation tools
• knowledge of computer hardware, software and common office productivity applications such as spreadsheets, word processing and databases to perform website support and maintenance, and to develop spreadsheets, manipulate data and tables, produce posters and reports, create presentations, etc.
• working knowledge of office and field equipment (e.g. scanners, plotters, printers, GPS units, digital cameras, etc.) to download and manipulate electronic information, data and images

Analytical and problem-solving skills:

• analytical, research, planning and organizational skills to organize, synthesize and analyze a variety of digital geoscience datasets to develop program-specific geoscience solutions
• time management skills to manage multiple projects and multiple timelines
• problem-solving and basic project planning skills to develop strategies for the efficient and effective implementation of new projects and to assess potentially contentious technical issues and develop effective and consistent resolutions

Knowledge of earth sciences and related datasets:

• general knowledge of earth sciences terminology, including geoscience principles and datasets, to assist program staff in compiling and synthesizing geological data and images electronically for constructing geological compilations, maps, posters, displays and presentations; to enter technical data into digital geoscience databases; and instruct clients and staff on the use of office/geoscience databases
