What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:
• conduct field data collection programs and at times lead a field crew to ensure that work is conducted to provincial standards
• operate specialized sampling equipment and ATVs when in the field
• maintain data quality standards and the timely completion of surveys
• provide leadership to students and unclassified staff on behalf of the supervisor
• manage equipment inventory and service field equipment
How do I qualify?
Mandatory:
• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You have the ability to undertake physically demanding fieldwork in remote locations, in all types of weather conditions.
Technical expertise:
• field-based knowledge of terrestrial ecosystems (e.g. wetlands and forests), standard protocols and methodologies (e.g. soil description/classification, forest ecosystem classification techniques) to collect data to current provincial standards
• knowledge and skills in orientation, including the use of maps, compass and GPS to navigate in remote forest areas and wetlands to locate plots and conduct fieldwork
• knowledge of standards and operating practices for information gathering (e.g. data collection and inventory techniques, data preparation, entry and digitizing) to ensure complete and accurate information to compile and summarize data for reports
Field equipment proficiency:
• knowledge and ability in operating ATVs to access remote sampling sites
• working knowledge of field equipment operations to perform field maintenance, adjustments and repair equipment (e.g. tree height measuring devices, increment borers, diameter tapes, peat and soil corers)
Communication and interpersonal skills
• oral and written communication skills to collaborate with partner agencies and landowners, present findings, as well as to prepare preliminary data analysis and data summaries
• interpersonal skills in order to work effectively in a team environment
Organizational skills:
• planning and coordinating skills to assist with organizing schedules and equipment (e.g. accommodations, vehicle transportation) for field projects
Computer proficiency:
• proficient with personal computers/applications/field tablets to enter data, prepare preliminary data analysis and data summaries
