The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the Communications & Technology Services Bureau are seeking a qualified individual to join our Radio Operations Unit. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will provide technical expertise and support in the operation and maintenance of telecommunication systems in the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Information Technology and Telecommunication Services Unit (ITTS) is one of two principal sections that comprise the Communications and Technology Services Bureau (CTSB).

Our dedicated IT and telecom professionals deliver a range of business-critical services to the Ontario Provincial Police, including Service Assurance, Service Delivery, Assets & Administration, Special Projects, and Relationships/Change Management.

ITTS personnel are engaged in an array of dynamic, technology-focused activities and initiatives. These include project management, systems coordination, technical analysis, service desk support, geomatics, business intelligence, telecommunications installation/support, programming, procurement and administration, to name a few. Through the essential products and services we deliver, we support the OPP in meeting its mandate of providing efficient and effective frontline policing across Ontario.

The Telecommunications Section is a key business line situated within Information Technology and Telecommunications Services (ITTS) in the Communications and Technology Services Bureau (CTSB). The section is based at OPP General Headquarters and comprised of the Radio Unit and the Telephone Unit. Both units provide standardization, support and project management for all radio and telephone-related initiatives and projects across the province.

The ITTS Radio Unit provides direction and support for all OPP communications radio systems and equipment in conjunction with the Government Mobile Communications Branch (GMCB) and radio service contractors such as Bell Mobility Radio and Point-to-Point Communications.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation.
• Ability to work on regular scheduled on-call basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of all sub-system components involved in telecommunications systems and their inter relationship, including microwave, mobile, portable and base radios and repeaters, diesel generators, standby and back-up power systems, alarm reporting system, telephone and radio system switches, dispatch computer, communications consoles, voicemail systems, console and communications centre voice recording systems, network tie lines and order wires to ensure optimum operation of an emergency response system.

Knowledge of system design criteria and theoretical principles, security and recovery procedures and connectivity to properly make recommendations to supervisor or unit commanders.

Knowledge of the FleetNet Radio System to diagnose problems and accommodate changes or upgrades.

Knowledge of evolving Radio Technologies and Land Mobile Radio solutions used in Public Safety.

Knowledge software programs used in system operations and for the preparation of reports, spreadsheets and presentations.

Oral communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent written communication skills. Effective listening to users reports of faults in order to determine problems. Ability to work in a team environment.

Evaluative and problem solving skills to analyze condition, technical performance and capacity of existing system components within OPP control by isolating electrical, mechanical and software elements to determine how they interact, to determine the nature of the problem, research, identify and set priorities to correct problems, making repairs, replacing parts devising a new solution to the problem utilizing existing resources and/or directing contractors.

Analytical skills to make recommendations on need and feasibility for expansion, renovation, replacement or other corrective action; interpreting and applying new information, technology and design methods to telecommunications operations and problems of systems components within OPP control. Ability to assess and evaluate the needs of clients.

Makes decisions to resolve day-to-day technical problems related to operation of systems and sub-systems within pre-determined limits, i.e., service degradation, failures. During emergency situations, may be required to take action to resolve problems prior to receiving supervisory/managerial approval in order to effect a timely response and restore vital operations.

Ability to prioritize work.
