If you are a dynamic leader and resource professional come join the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry team, where you will lead the acquisition, development/transfer of biological, ecological and forest science data knowledge and information required for the description and forecasting of forest growth, yield and stand dynamics in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence (GLSL) and Deciduous forest ecosystems in southern region.

About the job

In this role, you will:

• develop, evaluate and validate GLSL/Deciduous forest growth and yield (G&Y) information management products and tools
• provide program expertise and advice in the development and calibration of GLSL/Deciduous forest growth and yield and stand dynamics
• provide evaluation of forest sustainability in southern region
• conduct resource analysis and modelling
• provide leadership and advice in developing GLSL/Deciduous forest science strategies, programs and practices in support of natural resources policy, management, planning/operational program needs for southern Ontario

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You must possess a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) designation from the Ontario Professional Foresters Association or have the ability to transfer designation from out-of-province and be able to practice professional forestry without professional supervision.

Technical knowledge and skills:

• You have advanced knowledge of GLSL and deciduous forest region biology, ecology, soils, mensuration, forest growth and yield modelling and quantitative silviculture.
• You have advanced knowledge of selection and shelterwood silvicultural systems and G&Y decision support tools applicable to these for silvicultural decision making and wood supply analysis.
• You have sound knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of ecosystem and forest resource management.
• You have knowledge of scientific methods such as experimental design, plot establishment, measurement and maintenance of forest growth and yield plots and statistical analysis.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You have well developed communication skills to lead and provide input to strategic and operational plans, scientific publications and reports and prepare project proposals and status reports.
• You have demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to participate in workshops and communicate with internal and external stakeholders and to present project and program proposals to clients, partners and ministry staff.
• You can facilitate cooperation between researchers, clients and partners with varying views and interests.
• You demonstrate a proven ability to work within and across teams.

Analytical and problem-solving skills:

• You have analytical and problem-solving skills to determine, clarify and evaluate options and identify approaches to address forest management problems.
• You can interpret and synthesize information from scientific studies into solutions by developing guidelines and recommendations.
• You can analyze and assess the effectiveness of research and technology development and establish criteria for measuring the success and future applicability of project results.

Planning and organizational skills:

• You have demonstrated planning skills to implement and manage complex field monitoring, assessment and model validation programs in a changing, flexible environment.
• You have organizational skills to determine client needs by leading client working groups and workshops to help direct provincial program direction.

Computer skills:

• You have demonstrated computer querying skills with database management systems, as well as proficiency with spreadsheets, GIS, graphics packages, statistical software, word-processing, email and internet.
