About the job
• Operate, troubleshoot, replace, repair, and various building systems
• Perform plumbing and electric repairs and installations
• Inspect and perform necessary adjustments, servicing, and repairs to correct malfunctions
• Repair and maintain equipment, structures, and furniture
• Coordinate and plan new maintenance projects
• Perform emergency repairs
• Liaise with and assist other trades professionals as needed
• Complete and maintain accurate tracking logs and records
• Train and supervise inmate helpers, as required

What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You are qualified in one or more of the skilled trades including appropriate license(s) issued by the Government of Ontario
• Valid First Aid and Heartsaver Certificate or the ability to obtain
Specialized Knowledge and Experience
• You have advanced knowledge of at least one recognized skilled trade and working knowledge of other skilled trades in order to perform major and minor repairs, renovations and construction projects (i.e. plumbing, carpentry, welding, brick laying, etc.)
• You have experience planning and performing a wide variety of maintenance, repairs, and renovation tasks
• You have experience with the operation/maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning/fire systems as well as associated instrumentation/control systems
• You have experience with blueprints, schematics and specification diagrams/drawings
• You are experienced in the safe use of power equipment and hand tools
• You have knowledge of relevant legislation (such as Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS), municipal by-laws and codes, and provincial building codes
• You are able to acquire knowledge of and comply with corporate policies and protocols
• You have knowledge of computers and systems related to monitoring automated systems for mechanical and electrical equipment, electronic locking systems, building environmental controls and prepare reports, and respond to email
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• You are able to discuss work projects with other trades personnel and liaise with correctional staff
• You can instruct staff and inmate helpers
• You have written communication skills to complete performance and occurrence reports and maintain accurate logs
Problem-Solving Skills
• You can ensure the safety and integrity of installations, prevent injuries to staff or inmate helpers, and determine work methods
• Recognize workplace hazards and security breaches and ensure prompt corrective action
• You can provide input on inmate helper performance
• You are able to ensure work is completed in a timely manner
