The Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre with the Ministry of the Solicitor General requires a cleaner to provide cleaning maintenance services in the general administrative and inmate occupied areas of the facility.

Please note this position is on-call, irregularly scheduled from 0 up to 40.00 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends required.

About the job

In this role, you will:
• perform physical cleaning services in all areas of the institution such as operating heavy duty industrial cleaning equipment
• use platform lifts as well as lift and move office equipment and furniture to allow for cleaning
• lift and dispose garbage and refuse
• maintain premises by cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, dusting offices, corridors, washing woodwork and tiles, walls and ceilings, removing graffiti, cleaning inside windows, light fixtures and vents, removing wax and finishing floors, cleaning washrooms and replenishing supplies
• perform general services such as unloading supplies from trucks, locking doors, switching off utilities, and reporting defective equipment
• maintain records and security of cleaning supplies used, and requesting supervisor to requisition replacement supplies as needed

What you bring to the team


Technical and Safety Knowledge:

• you have knowledge of infection prevention and control in a health care setting including environmental cleaning practices
• you have demonstrated knowledge of cleaning methods and processes and the use industrial cleaning equipment within an institutional setting (i.e. floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, materials) to perform required cleaning and housekeeping duties
• you have knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) for safe handling of chemical solutions used for cleaning
• you have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) and institutional security practices and procedures to ensure compliance with standards
• you understand proper equipment operation and utilization and can maintain the safety and security of the work area and offender helpers

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:

• you can determine the type of cleaning agent used for various cleaning tasks
• you can determine daily priorities, recognize equipment problems, needs for maintenance or repairs and deficiencies or shortages in supplies
• you can recognize security and workplace hazards so that corrective action can be prompt and report problems to the supervisor when necessary

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• you can convey information about the use, care and storage of cleaning agents and solvents and about the use and care of cleaning and maintenance equipment to offender helpers
• you can maintain accurate records of the use of cleaning materials and other supplies
• you can increase staff and offender awareness of the need for caution around obstructions where cleaning is taking place

    Employees who do not provide proof of full vaccination will be deemed ‘not vaccinated' under the Employer's policy and will be required to attend a vaccine education program, as determined by the Employer. Employees who are not vaccinated under the policy with a valid medical exemption will not be required to attend a vaccine education program. All employees working in congregate living settings must undergo regular rapid antigen testing, regardless of vaccination status.
