The Legal Services Branch of the Ministry of the Solicitor General provides a full range of legal services in: public and administrative law; human rights; freedom of information and protection of privacy; procurement and contracts; and the law governing policing, correctional services, coroners and animal welfare. Branch counsel represent ministry clients before all levels of court, and administrative tribunals, including the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, the Animal Care Review Board, coroners' inquests, and police misconduct proceedings.
Branch counsel also participate in the development of legislation and regulations, prepare and review a wide variety of contracts and other legal documents, and provide legal opinions and advice for their diverse client base. Ministry clients include: the Ontario Provincial Police; provincial Correctional Services; the Office of the Chief Coroner; Ontario Forensic Pathology Services; the Office of the Fire Marshal; the Office of the Chief Animal Welfare Inspector, and Ministry divisions such as: Public Safety; Strategic Policy Research and Innovation; and Corporate Services.

About the job
Articling students will assist Branch counsel by:
conducting research; drafting memos, opinions, facta, and correspondence; assisting with contracts and procurement; reviewing documents and preparing materials for court and tribunal proceedings; and attending client meetings, mediations, inquests, and hearings with counsel.
The students' work may include longer-term research projects as well as more urgent matters with tight timelines. The students will have carriage of Small Claims Court matters under the supervision of counsel and will work with the Class Actions Legal Team. Students may also have an opportunity to do a placement as a provincial offences prosecutor.
