Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is a statutory corporation mandated to provide effective and high-quality legal aid services throughout Ontario in a client-focused and accountable manner while ensuring value for money. The General Counsel Office (GCO) of LAO provides legal support to LAO. GCO is looking for two (2) exceptional, adaptable corporate lawyers to join our high performing and expanding legal team. This is an opportunity to work on interesting transactions in a collegial, casual, fast paced, and challenging environment. As part of GCO's business law team, the
successful candidate will report directly to the Director, Business Law.

Our organization has both unionized and non-union employee groups; your experience advising within such context would be an asset.

This position is a work from home position, however, on occasion, and with advance notice, you may be required to attend our head office in Toronto.

About the job

Key accountabilities
  • providing solutions-oriented legal and strategic advice to management and internal clients across he organization on a broad range of issues including with respect to: LAO's mandate; applicable laws, directives, policies, rules, and regulations; public procurements; commercial leasing; labour and employment; equity, diversity and inclusion; ethical conduct and conflicts of interest; workplace health and safety; accommodations; leave management; workplace investigations; terminations; collective bargaining; corporate governance; privacy and records management
  • advising on governing laws, rules, regulations, policies, and government directives
  • monitoring changes to relevant laws and communicating developments/implications to
    management and staff
  • supporting other GCO units such as the Privacy and Information Management Office
  • drafting and negotiating a wide variety of agreements with vendors, service providers, transfer
    payment recipients, and stakeholders
  • creating and maintaining contract templates
  • preparing research memos, briefing notes, and presentations as required
  • supporting periodic reviews of GCO policies
  • partnering and managing relationships with external counsel when required
  • other duties as assigned (which may include providing support to the Corporate Secretary)

What you bring to the team

Required skills & experience

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • At least six (6) years of post-call relevant experience at a law firm or in-house legal department
    preferably with government or in the public sector
  • Significant experience managing transactions and knowledge of specialized areas of law including
    contract, procurement, labour and employment, privacy, records management, property, technology, statutory and regulatory
  • Client-oriented and solution-driven with a practical approach
  • Attentive to detail
  • Effective time management skills
  • Self-motivated but able to work collaboratively with the legal team, internal clients, and stakeholders on multiple competing tasks
  • Sound legal and business judgment; ability to balance legal risk and business objectives
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills
  • High level of motivation, initiative, and commitment
  • Proficient in use of the internet, word processing, remote network access systems, and email applications
  • Proficiency in French will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Legal Aid Services Act, 2020 and the Legal Aid Services Rules will be considered as asset.
