About the job

• Perform general maintenance, repairs, general upkeep duties in one or more of the skilled trades and other related support services
• Operate, troubleshoot, repair/maintain all heating, ventilation, fire systems, associated electromechanical devices, subsystems
• Operate and/or maintain various pumps/burners, water softeners, kitchen items, grounds equipment, replacing and/or cleaning air and roll media filters, lubricating, belt tightening, etc.
• Repair and/or maintain tubular steel furniture, water tanks, power plant equipment, security screens, steel structures, security and non-security locks
• Perform emergency repairs in the absence of other maintenance staff and assist plumber and electrician as required with their duties
• Complete/maintain appropriate logs/records
• Grounds keeping duties including cutting grass and shoveling snow
• Other duties, as required

*Note: This position may require some working with and supervision of inmate workers

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You are licenced in one or more of the skilled trades OR have equivalent acceptable knowledge/experience

Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have knowledge of at least one skilled trade as well as working knowledge of other skilled trades (such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, brick laying) and semi-skilled trades in order to perform major and minor repairs, renovations and construction projects.
• Knowledge of blueprints, schematics and specification diagrams/drawings
• You have thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning/fire systems, and associated instrumentation/control systems
• You have knowledge of relevant legislation (such as Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS), municipal by-laws and codes, and provincial building codes
• You have knowledge of environmental waste management regulations for garbage and hazardous waste to ensure safe storage and disposal
• You have proficiency with computer systems, automated monitoring systems, mechanical and electrical equipment, electronic locking systems, building environmental controls, and security monitors (CCTV) to review information on automated systems and perform quality assurance checks

Other Skills

• You have communication and interpersonal skills to discuss work projects with other trades personnel as well as liaise with correctional staff
• You have written communication skills to complete reports on assigned projects as well as maintain accurate logs
• You have analytical skills to ensure the safety and integrity of installations as well as recognize workplace hazards and security breaches and ensure prompt corrective action
• You can ensure work is completed in a timely manner
• You have demonstrated ability to understand and comply with corporate policies and protocols in order to acquire knowledge of institutional security practices and procedures

    Employees who do not provide proof of full vaccination will be deemed ‘not vaccinated' under the Employer's policy and will be required to attend a vaccine education program, as determined by the Employer. Employees who are not vaccinated under the policy with a valid medical exemption will not be required to attend a vaccine education program. All employees working in congregate living settings must undergo regular rapid antigen testing, regardless of vaccination status.
