About the job

As a Court Interpreter, you will:

• perform interpretation and translation work both in and out of court
• accurately interpret testimony, which may be highly complex and technical, ensuring that it is conveyed without distortion, omissions or addition
• translate official and court-related documents, retaining the meaning, feeling and intent of the original text
• ensure that the translated text is consistent with approved legal and government terminology and is free from grammatical and typographical errors
• schedule interpreters for in-court work and monitor work for quality and consistency
• perform all other duties, as required, under the guidance and supervision of an on-site manager

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• Ministry accreditation in interpretation from English to French and French to English, or the ability to pass the necessary testing requirements

Translation and Interpretation Skills

• you have excellent communication skills, in both English and French, to provide translation and interpretation services
• you can convey meaning, feeling and intent of original words and identify language problems that may impact the parties' understanding of the text or testimony
• you have a strong vocabulary and an understanding of grammar and sentence structure in both English and French
• you have knowledge of simultaneous (e.g. working with headset, providing interpretation as originator is speaking) and consecutive (listening to originator and providing interpretation when speaker finished) interpretation methods

Interpersonal Skills

• you can work with a diverse range of staff and clients, which could include the judiciary, free-lance interpreters, witnesses, the accused and court staff
• you work well independently and within a team

Quality Service and Interpersonal Skills

• ability to understand government quality service standards, build effective working relationships and provide a full professional level of interpretation for all levels of court
• interpersonal skills to provide client service, maintain the confidence of those for whom interpretation is provided, and to work

Other Essential Skills

• you are familiar with legal terminology to ensure accurate rendering of legal terms and ideas, and knowledge of related areas/matters (e.g. firearms, narcotics)
• you can research new terminology as required to ensure an accurate translation
• you are highly organized and can work effectively in a high-volume environment with shifting priorities

Communication, Research, Analytical and Evaluative Skills

• ability to communicate tactfully in English and French
• analytical and evaluative skills to deal with sensitive and confidential information
• research skills to research terminology
