The Treasury Board Secretariat, Legal Services Branch in the Ministry of the Attorney General has an exciting opportunity for two dynamic individuals to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Law Clerk on a wide range of challenging litigation files.

The Treasury Board Secretariat, Legal Services Branch is an established centre of excellence, providing legal and strategic advice and representation to TBS and the Government as a whole.

The Law Clerks will be working under the direction of various Crown Counsel engaged in labour and employment related litigation. The Labour Practice Group Counsel in the branch is responsible for the provision of legal advice in labour relations matters, primarily though the representation of line ministries and some Crown agencies in litigation before private arbitrations, a variety of administrative tribunals and all levels of court.

About the job

As a Law Clerk, you will:
• gather, assess, and organize documentary and related evidence
• review records and other documents including those that are historical and highly sensitive
• keep Crown counsel informed of matters needed to conduct litigation
• communicate with clients and witnesses regularly and conduct witness interviews
• communicate with members of the legal profession and government officials
• assist in drafting legal documents and ensure compliance with the requirements of the relevant collective agreements
• manage large document files, prepare transcript commentaries and chronological lists or summaries of documents
• carry out research of legislation, regulations, law reports, publications and reporting results
• conduct research using legal databases such as Quicklaw, BestCase, Grievance Awards Tracking System (GATS), Westlaw
• assist with the organization and preparation of the branch's Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Seminars

Mandatory requirements

•Typing speed at 50 wpm

Specialized Knowledge

You have demonstrated knowledge of:
• legal office methods, procedures and related policies, court administration practices and procedures, and relevant federal and provincial statutes to provide administrative and research support
• procedures and policies applicable to the grievance processes and procedures as set out in relevant collective agreements (OPSEU, AMAPCEO, ALOC, OPPA, PEGO)

Research, Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

• You have research and analytical skills to complete information pertinent to case histories, and determine relevancy to legal issues involved
• You can research files and case law for references
• You can identify unresolved issues, and assist clients in resolving issues

Organizational and Judgment Skills

• You have superior organizational skills to set priorities, meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment and produce work accurately
• You can work independently and perform tasks with minimal guidance
• You have strong judgment skills and you can exercise discretion in determining confidentiality of privileged information to be revealed to the client or public
• You demonstrate a high degree of tact and courtesy when responding to internal and external stakeholders

Communication Skills

• You have verbal communication skills to interact with members of the legal profession, the public, all levels of government, and tribunal or court administration officials
• You have strong writing skills and are able to use appropriate legal terminology and phraseology to prepare legal documents

Computer Skills

• You are proficient with software such as Word, Windows, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook and SharePoint to produce correspondence, memoranda and legal documents, to organize precedents and templates, and to establish data bases of documents
