About the job

In this position you will have both regulatory and advisory responsibilities. You will:

• provide expert veterinary advice and support to a variety of internal and external partners
• support the provincial meat inspection system by providing advice, regulatory approvals, plant audits, interpretation of standards and regulations and the development and delivery of training for ministry staff, operators and stakeholders
• maintain current knowledge level by regularly reviewing pertinent veterinary and meat hygiene literature as related to zoonotic disease and meat hygiene

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements:

• You are licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in Ontario granted by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO), or qualified to become licensed having passed all required components of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) and be able to become licensed by the CVO within four weeks. Successful candidates must hold a General license from the College of Veterinarians to practice in Ontario.
• You are able to travel throughout Ontario to areas not accessible by public transit.

Technical expertise:

• You have knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of food animals.
• You have knowledge of livestock husbandry and welfare.
• You have experience handling livestock in a clinical and field setting.
• You have an understanding of livestock production systems.

Inspections knowledge:

• You have experience diagnosing zoonotic and other animal diseases through ante and post-mortem inspections.
• You are able to evaluate the suitability and potential health risks associated with animals, meat and/or meat products intended for food.

Food safety knowledge:

• You have knowledge of food safety process controls and sanitation practices.
• You have the ability to interpret and apply food safety standards, regulations and legislation.

Communication skills:

• You have oral communication skills to explain technical concepts and deliver training to diverse audiences.
• You have consultation and conflict resolution skills to mediate disputes with economic impacts.
• You have written communication skills to prepare a variety of reports and correspondence.
• You have relationship management skills to work collaboratively with various internal and external stakeholders.

Essential skills:

• You have organizational and time management skills to plan, coordinate and deliver veterinary inspection and audit services.
• You are proficient with common office productivity software such as word processors, spreadsheets, email and presentation applications, and with statistical analysis and database management software.
• You have experience handling livestock in a clinical and field setting, have an understanding of livestock production systems, and the ability to communicate with livestock stakehoders throughout the value chain.
