About the Mapping and Information Resources Branch:
The Branch is an essential partner in the management of Ontario's natural resources. We ensure decisions are supported by the best available data and advice through leadership in Crown land surveying, mapping and information management. The Office of the Surveyor General oversees all legal descriptions used to issue surface and mineral rights on Ontario Crown land, land claims settlements and regulatory control on land development and use.

About the job

Reporting to Manager, Office of the Surveyor General, you will:

• Manage the Crown Land Surveys unit which is responsible for organizing and directing the installation and maintenance of provincial Crown surveys.
• Provide expert advice on survey matters to the survey industry, government departments and agencies.
• Manage the planning and delivery of the Crown Land Survey program including: administration of repository of Crown survey records; activities of staff and private sector surveyors.
• Coordinate the review of all Crown land surveys and plans undertaken by government and private surveyors to ensure that statutory requirements and quality standards are met.
• Act as the Ministry expert on cadastral surveys regarding the technical and legal requirements of surveys and plans.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory Requirements:

• You have a valid class G driver's license or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.
• You are able and willing to travel across the regions.

Leadership and Management Skills:

• You have experience providing strategic direction, guidance and coaching to staff and/or project teams.
• You have experience fostering an environment of high performance, learning, growth and continuous improvement.
• You can engage team members in a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting innovation and creativity.
• You have experience developing and implementing practical solutions to unique and complex issues.
• You have demonstrated skills in managing financial budgets and human resources, including labour relations issues.

Technical Knowledge and Experience:

• You have thorough knowledge of theories, principles and practices of cadastral land surveying, land management and related legislation, case law and technological trends with focus on public lands.
• You have knowledge of the surveys Act and the survey-related portions of the Mining Act, Land Titles Act and the Registry Act in order to interpret the legislation and recommend amendments.
• You have knowledge of the Surveyors General's responsibilities to decide on statutory issues related to compliance with legislation (i.e. Surveyor's Act, Surveys Act, and Public Lands Act).
• You have knowledge of computer concepts, information, surveying and drafting technology to improve surveying methods and procedures.

Communication, Stakeholder and Relationship Management Skills:

• You have interpersonal skills to deal with staff, clients and the general public.
• You have sound communication skills to liaise with all levels of government, surveyors and lawyers and to make presentations.
• You have advanced writing skills to prepare minister letters, briefing notes, professional reports, policies and proposed legislation.

Project Management Skills:

• You have demonstrated project management experience, time management and planning skills to coordinate human, financial and material resources to achieve program objectives.
• You have the skills and experience to plan, develop and manage various projects and initiatives and ensure they are completed within set timeframes.
• You have knowledge of budgetary and financial processes to prepare, implement fiscal and performance budgets, multi-year and annual work plans, and monitor/report on budget allocations.
