Join the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Communications Services Branch to provide issues management expertise and advisory services to ensure consistent messaging and positioning of ministry programs, policies and direction through ongoing monitoring and management of contentious issues.

About the job

In this challenging role you will:

• provide support for the ongoing issues management process
• prepare strategies and materials to respond to emerging and contentious issues
• research, produce and edit a variety of issues management materials including House and Briefing notes
• research and analyze media and legislative processes to ensure that emerging issues are anticipated and appropriate responses are taken
• develop and implement strategies for consistent messaging of corporate policies and objectives

What you bring to the team


Analytical and problem-solving skills:

• You have a high degree of analytical skills to analyze cross-organizational implications and recommend actions.
• You possess advanced research and analytical skills to identify and analyze potential and existing contentious issues.
• You demonstrate the ability to resolve contentious or politically sensitive issues by amending communications strategies and making recommendations to senior management and political staff.
• You possess the ability to apply and interpret policies, procedures and legislation coupled with a clear understanding of government political decision making and legislative processes.

Interpersonal and relationship building skills:

• You possess interpersonal and relationship building skills to interact effectively with staff at all levels and to coordinate communications activities with other stakeholders.
• You have the ability to utilize tact, judgment and discretion.
• You demonstrate interpersonal skills, diplomacy and political acuity to interact with Minister's office staff and Cabinet Office.

Communication skills:

• You possess superior written communication skills to develop issues management strategies and a range of briefing materials including house notes and briefing notes.
• You have strong oral communication and consulting skills to discuss client program objectives, new initiatives and communication requirements.

Technical knowledge:

• You have demonstrated working knowledge of journalism and media/public relations techniques to organize well-designed, planned and executed media events.
• You possess computer proficiency skills to create media responses, briefing notes, presentations and reports in a Microsoft Office Suite environment coupled with the ability to use the internet/intranet to conduct research.

Project management and coordination skills:

• You possess project management, planning, coordination and organizational skills to manage a number of concurrent projects with competing deadlines.
• You have the ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
