Indigenous Internship Program

The Indigenous Internship Program (IIP) is a 12-month paid internship program designed to provide recent Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) post-secondary graduates, with the opportunity to gain professional level work experience and a pathway through which they can build and develop transferable skills that can be used to gain sustained employment in their field of choice.

You must self-identify as an Indigenous person to be eligible for this program. The term Indigenous refers to individuals who identify as being descended from the original inhabitants (the first peoples) of what is now known as Canada. In this context, Indigenous people are First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit.

Ministry of Northern Development - Transportation, Trade and Investment Branch (1)

The Transportation and Infrastructure Unit delivers programs and addresses problems related to Northern Ontario infrastructure. The team works with other ministries to identify issues and propose solutions to long-term transportation challenges facing Northern Ontario, including in the Far North. Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing - Housing Programs Branch/Community and Supportive Housing Division (1)

The Community and Supportive Housing Division is responsible for the development and implementation of the Ministry's housing and homelessness prevention initiatives. Within this Division, the Housing Programs Branch designs, implements, administers, and monitors these programs and works in partnership with Ontario's 47 municipal service managers and two Indigenous Program Administrators to deliver these programs. Relationships with municipal services offices, municipal service managers, Indigenous Program Administrators, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, non-profit and co-operative housing providers, the private sector and non-profit builders are key to the branch activities.

Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing - Municipal Services Division – Central (2)

Join the Central Ontario Municipal Services Office (MSO) in the Municipal Services Division.

As an intern in the Local Government and Housing (LGH) Unit, you will provide support to ongoing operational guidance to municipal clients with the aim of building strong communities and developing accountable local governments. The LGH unit in MSO responds to and anticipates municipal issues and trends of provincial interest, communicates key government priorities to municipal stakeholders, and assists municipalities to access government programs and to capitalize on best practices in implementation of housing programs, municipal finance and administration.

As an intern in the Community Planning and Development Unit, you will gain practical land use planning experience by assisting in providing 'one window' planning service for provincial input and decision-making by participating in the review of municipal official plans and in the delivery of advisory services to promote effective community planning.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You must have graduated or will complete the requirements to graduate with a degree, diploma or post-graduate certificate from a recognized or legally authorized post-secondary institution in the last five years (May 2018-June 2023).
• You must be an Indigenous person. The term Indigenous refers to individuals who identify as being descended from the original inhabitants (the first peoples) of what is now known as Canada. In this context, Indigenous people are First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit.
• You must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Analytical and research skills:

• You understand research and analytical practices to source and analyze a variety of information and data, as well as identify trends to support the development of evidence-based findings and recommendations.
• You can interpret and apply legislation, policies, processes and procedures.

Communication skills:

• You can prepare and present various documents, including presentations, reports and summaries.
• You can clearly and concisely communicate information.
