About the job

In this role, you will:

• participate in the development and implementation of an integrated science and information program and fisheries population management and monitoring
• identify the science and information required by resource practitioners
• identify the best existing science, knowledge, information, and technology available to meet the needs of resource management practitioners
• conduct reviews and synthesize information from scientific and resource management literature
• develop and refine practices, standards, indices and tools related to fisheries population, their monitoring and management and the conservation of aquatic diversity
• lead and/or participate on project/task teams and other forums such as workshops and training sessions
• develop new practices, technologies and transfer existing science, knowledge, information and technology

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirement:

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You have the ability to obtain a SVOP (Small Vessel Operating Proficiency) and MED A-3 (Marine Emergency Duties) certificate issued by the Canadian Coast Guard.
• You have the ability to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate.

Technical expertise

• You have demonstrated knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of aquatic ecosystem management, fisheries population ecology and management, fish physiology and behavior, monitoring and biometrics.
• You have the ability to interpret and apply resource management legislation, regulations, policies and guidelines such as the Environmental Bill of Rights, the Environmental Assessment Act and the Federal Fisheries Act.
• You have knowledge of scientific methods such as experimental and sampling design and statistical analysis to design, organize and implement science and monitoring projects and provide advice.

Communication and interpersonal skills

• You have excellent oral communication skills to present project and program proposals to clients, partners and staff, transfer science and technology in symposia and provide guidance and advice.
• You have well-developed written communication skills to provide input to scientific publications, project proposals and reports.
• You have strong interpersonal and consultative skills to facilitate cooperation between researchers, clients and partners.

Analytical and problem-solving skills

• You have analytical and problem-solving skills to clarify problems, evaluate options and identify approaches.
• You have interpreting and synthesizing skills to translate information from scientific studies into solutions by developing guidelines and recommendations.

Computer skills

• You are proficient with computer software including word processing, data management, spreadsheets and statistical analysis programs to access and analyze information, prepare scientific reports, publications and presentations.

Project management skills

• You have project management and organizational skills to determine client needs by leading working groups, interviewing staff and researching available scientific/technical information to meet those needs.
