The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is a regulatory agency that reports to the Ministry of
the Attorney General. The AGCO is responsible for regulating the alcohol, gaming, horseracing, and private
cannabis retail sectors in Ontario, in accordance with the principles of honesty and integrity, and in the public
interest.

The Communications branch of the Communications and Service Experience Division is seeking a Senior
Communications Advisor
. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Communications, the Senior Communications
Advisor plays a critical role in developing employee and external communications plans that support the
AGCO's initiatives and provides strategic communications and public relations advice during the planning and
implementation of corporate projects. Also, the Senior Communications Advisor will proactively identify and
mitigate issues that may affect the agency's brand and reputation, and profile and promote the
organization's mandate, business services, products and achievements to the public, regulated entities,
employees and other stakeholders. The role performs the function of editorial lead, ensuring consistency of
brand voice, style, messaging and narrative is reflected in high profile public-facing content.

About the job

In this role, the successful candidate will:
• Develop, with senior management and client groups, communication objectives, strategies, products,
and messages.
• Develop options and innovative communication strategies, approaches, and recommendations in
relation to existing and proposed corporate initiatives.
• Develop the communication plans to support the initiatives' objectives, while ensuring alignment to
the agency's overall strategic communications goals and priorities.
• Identify potential reputational issues that may result from the agency's initiatives, support the
development of mitigation strategies and develop appropriate messaging for responding to those
issues.
• Monitor media coverage to remain current of public, political, and sectoral issues.
• Write and produce content and coordinate the design, development and production of
communication products with the digital designers.
• As needed, review and edit documents prepared by other groups in keeping with plain language,
brand voice, narrative, accessibility, UX and style standards, for publication and posting on the
agency's website.
• Research, write and produce a range of electronic and print communications and promotional
materials (e.g., web and social media content, infographics, newsletters, bulletins, brochures, articles,
reports, internal and external education and briefing materials).
• Conduct/participate in projects for the planning, design and implementation of special
events/conferences/meetings, etc. in support of the organization, coordinate the execution of
logistical and communications requirements appropriate to the event, including, e.g., invitations,
promotions, media advisories, etc.
• Ensure products meet French-language and accessibility requirements.
• Analyze a broad range of issues, trends, and directions that may impact the development of
communication and messaging strategies and products.
• Mentor team members as required on development of strategic writing i.e., plain language principles,
B2B and B2C content.
• Provide final editorial review of high-profile public facing content as required.

What you bring to the team


The ideal candidate will have:

• A bachelor's degree in communications, media or journalism or equivalent experience in the relevant
field at senior capacity.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in project management, program development
and/or public policy development, ideally in a public sector and/or regulatory setting.
• Analyzing/Problem Solving Skill.
• Superior oral and written English and French languages and communication skills. Working familiarity
with French would be an asset. For a Bilingual position - A French language proficiency evaluation is
required for this role.
• Strategic writing expertise. Knowledge and experience with plain language writing principles,
development of engaging B2B and B2C content. Experience developing compelling narratives, while
ensuring consistency of brand voice, messaging and style. Knowledge of UX writing and CP style an
asset.
• Significant experience collaborating with senior management, directors, external stakeholders, and
partners.
• High level research and analysis skills.
• Computer proficiency (MS Office) to prepare own materials, internet to research information; and
web writing and communication to contribute to site content and the development of digital media
products.
• Knowledge of French Language Services Act and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act,
2005 and other related standards and policies.
• Writing samples/portfolio required.
• The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and will be subject to a criminal
background check.
