About the job
In this role, you will:
• provide biological advice and support in a regulatory setting to the protection and recovery of species at risk
• provide biological knowledge and technical expertise on species at risk and their terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems
• assist in the management of natural resource issues
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements:
• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You have the ability to work in the field under all types of weather conditions.
Technical knowledge:
• You have knowledge of and experience with theories, principles and practices of biology, applied ecology, sustainable resource management and landscape planning with a focus on species at risk aquatic & terrestrial ecosystems, habitat, population assessment and environmental impacts.
• You have scientific knowledge of species at risk (vascular and non-vascular plants, vertebrates and invertebrates) and their habitat (terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems at site specific and landscape scales).
• You have knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g. Endangered Species Act, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Fisheries Act), policies and procedures relating to species at risk.
• You have up-to-date knowledge of and experience in the application of biological modelling tools and fish and wildlife surveys procedures and techniques.
• You are proficient with computers, internet, email and software applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, statistical, spatial, population and habitat modelling, databases, and geographic information systems.
Communication and interpersonal skills:
• You have demonstrated interpersonal, facilitation and negotiation skills to reconcile differing points of view and garner support from various stakeholders.
• You have an ability to build relationships (i.e. with internal staff and external stakeholders) and work well in teams.
• You have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to explain technical information in plain language, to liaise with specialists and to compose scientific and technical reports.
Analytical skills
• You have proven analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills to critically assess proponent development proposals in order to provide expertise and advice on ecological impacts of activities and the protection of species at risk and their habitat.
Project management skills:
• You have proven project management and organizational skills to to plan and lead the review of scientific studies and development proposals.
