The Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre requires a cleaner to provide cleaning maintenance services in the general administrative and inmate occupied areas of the facility.

About the job

In this role, you will:
• Perform physical cleaning services in all areas of the institution such as operating heavy duty industrial cleaning equipment
• Use platform lifts as well as lift and move office equipment and furniture to allow for cleaning
• Lift and dispose garbage and refuse
• Maintain premises by cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, dusting offices, corridors, washing woodwork and tiles, walls and ceilings, removing graffiti, cleaning inside windows, light fixtures and vents, removing wax and finishing floors, cleaning washrooms and replenishing supplies
• Perform general services such as unloading supplies from trucks, locking doors, switching off utilities, and reporting defective equipment
• Maintain records and security of cleaning supplies used, and requesting supervisor to requisition replacement supplies as needed

NOTE:
• This position will be required to work rotating shifts, which will include occasional weekends
• The Cleaner works within a correctional facility and at times may be required to interact with inmates

What you bring to the team

Specialized and Safety Knowledge and Experience

• You have demonstrated knowledge of and experience with cleaning methods/processes and the use industrial cleaning equipment within an institutional setting (i.e. floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, and materials to perform required cleaning and housekeeping duties)
• You have experience with proper and safe equipment operation
• You have knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) for safe handling of chemical solutions used for cleaning as well as knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA)
• You have demonstrated ability to understand and comply with corporate policies and protocols in order to work within institutional security practices and procedures (i.e. maintain safety and security of the work area, other staff, and inmate helpers)

Problem-Solving Skills

• You can determine the appropriate type of cleaning agent to use for various cleaning tasks
• You can set daily priorities
• You are able to recognize equipment problems, need for maintenance or repairs, and deficiencies or shortages in supplies
• You can recognize security and workplace hazards so that corrective action can be prompt as well as report problems to the supervisor as needed

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You can convey information about the use, care and storage of cleaning agents and solvents and maintenance equipment
• You are able to maintain accurate records of the use of cleaning materials and other supplies
• You can alert staff and inmates of caution around obstructions where cleaning is taking place

Furthermore, employees working in congregate living settings may be required to undergo regular rapid antigen testing, regardless of vaccination status, as determined by the Employer.
