About the job
In the role, you will:
• provide technican support to scientific programs by establishing research plots, gathering mensurational, ecological and edaphic data, collecting field samples, performing laboratory experiments and maintaining specific equipment for experimental use
• support field studies by setting up sophisticated equipment under laboratory and field conditions and ensuring proper function for test conditions
• maintain records of equipment, supplies and vehicle usage, daily personal diaries, attendance and expense records
• maintain proper operation of laboratory and field equipment by testing output with controlled standards and effecting alterations, as required
• transfer field-collected data from electronic data capture devices to computers and evaluating integrity of data files and correcting inconsistencies
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator's Certificate.
• You have the ability to undertake physically demanding field work in all types of weather conditions.
Technical expertise:
• ability to locate and establish research plots, gather mensurational, ecological and edaphic data, collect field samples, perform laboratory experiments and maintain specific equipment for experimental use
• knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to advice workers of actual and potential dangers in the workplace and take the required precautions
Computer and equipment proficiency:
• proficient with computers and common office productivity software to provide statistical summaries and produce reports
• knowledge of sophisticated field and laboratory equipment such as forest mensuration and surveying instruments, office and drafting equipment, programmable calculators, cameras, microscopes, chemicals and stains, distillation apparatus, pH meters, precision balances, electronic test instruments, water and soil test kits, hand and power tools, growth chambers, TRIM system, electronic data capture devices, rhizometer, spectrometer, and area meter
Communication and interpersonal skills:
• interpersonal and interpretive skills to deal with requests and concerns of clients/partners (e.g. contractors, consultants, other MNR staff and the forest industry)
• ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to prepare written reports
Planning and coordination skills:
• ability to organize, schedule and coordinate human and equipment resources (e.g. boats/motors, pumps, vehicle transportation, aircraft, base camp equipment) for field projects with resource agencies involved in natural resources assessment and management
