About the job
• design, develop, implement and evaluate programs and studies to monitor food safety standards
• utilize scientific methods to assess the food safety of horticultural, dairy, meat or fish products
• review technical documents from national and international food safety organizations to ensure Ontario's food safety standards align with international standards
• provide scientific and technical advice on food safety issues, including the development of briefing materials for senior decision makers
• provide technical advice and guidance to inspection staff and industry stakeholders by evaluating laboratory tests, sanitation programs and food safety best practices and standards
• design, develop and implement scientific studies and surveillance programs to assess food safety risks (on-farm, in food processing facilities, etc.)
What you bring to the team
Knowledge of food science:
• You have knowledge and/or experience with food safety controls in either the horticultural, dairy, meat or fish processing industries.
• You have experience designing, developing and implementing scientific studies.
• You have experience applying theories, principles and best practices related to food safety risk analysis.
Analytical and problem solving skills:
• You have analytical skills to evaluate and interpret large quantities of complex scientific data to identify food safety risks and assess the potential impact of potential food safety hazards.
• You have problem solving skills to develop of food safety policies and inspection programs to mitigate food safety risks.
Communication and advisory skills:
• You have oral communication skills to explain complex scientific information to diverse audiences (other scientists, non-technical staff, etc.).
• You have interpersonal skills to liaise with inspection staff and industry representatives to gather information and provide technical guidance in the resolution of food safety issues.
• You have written communication and computer skills to prepare proposals, reports and presentations as well as scientific reports and publications.
