About the job

Guided by our modern regulator principles, you will:

• plan and implement investigations, collect and examine evidence, prepare Crown Briefs and assist with prosecutions
• protect consumers through enforcement of the provisions of legislation such as the Food Safety and Quality Act and the Milk Act
• investigate activities of unlicensed dealers under agricultural related legislation such as Bees Act and Livestock Community Sales Act
• participate in collaborative initiatives with other enforcement agencies responsible for the protection of Ontario consumers through the enforcement of food safety and other related legislation

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements:

• You have a valid Class 'G' Driver's licence and the ability to travel to locations not accessible by public transportation.
• You have the ability to achieve a Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate.
• You are eligible for Appointments under food safety and other relevant Provincial legislation.
• You are eligible for Appointment as a Provincial Offences Officer.
• You have the ability to successfully complete the ministry's Defensive Tactics training and Annual recertification.
• You have physical and mental endurance to implement enforcement activities in a stressful environment.
• You have physical stamina to work in inclement weather for long periods of time and at irregular hours.

Technical knowledge:

• You have experience applying enforcement and investigative techniques (e.g. collection and interpretation of evidence, obtaining search warrants and court orders, preparation of Crown Briefs and other legal documents, laying charges, assisting with prosecutions).
• You have knowledge of judicial processes, rules of evidence and court procedures.
• You have experience applying covert surveillance techniques and using related equipment for obtaining admissible evidence.
• You have knowledge of agricultural practices, food safety principles, policies and legislation related to agricultural and food processing operations.

Analytical skills:

• You have analytical skills to evaluate evidence obtained from a variety of sources, methods and techniques.
• You have analytical skills to interpret evidence in relation to relevant legislation to identify violations and determine if the evidence is sufficient to warrant legal action.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You have interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a provincially developed team with other enforcement agencies and regulatory partners.
• You have conflict resolution skills and sound judgment to respond appropriately in stressful and potentially threatening situations.
• You have oral communication skills to liaise with legal representatives, present evidence in court and tactfully respond to inquiries from the public and the media.
• You have written communication and computer skills to prepare legal documents and a variety of reports and correspondence with accuracy.

Other important skills:

• You have a high degree of integrity and professionalism to deal with confidential and highly sensitive information.
• You have organization and planning skills to independently plan your work schedule, establish priorities as well as coordinate the logistics of field investigations and operations of project task teams.
• You are proficient with database and record management software to input, manage and evaluate compliance and enforcement related data.

    Effective, January 1st, 2024 the correct salary range for this position will be $1,431.03 to $1,837.04 per (hour/week) in compliance with OPSEU collective agreement provisions.
