About the job

You will:
  • plan and coordinate the development, execution and evaluation of all existing event-based programming, interpretive programs, new initiatives and outreach activities
  • create, implement, and evaluate innovative redesign opportunities for existing events to generate increased exposure and attract more visitors
  • develop business cases, organize logistical arrangements, and acquire volunteers, materials, and support services to ensure successful events
  • liaise with appropriate departments to ensure timely, smooth execution, attention to detail, guest-friendly practices, and that all health, safety and compliance requirements are met
  • identify potential promotional partners and negotiate favourable terms and contracts
  • supervise event staff, volunteers and partner support and participate in the recruitment and selection of event staff
  • develop and implement a communication strategy and a range of communications products to market existing events, outreach opportunities and new event-based business, as required
  • provide expertise and support by conducting research to support program initiatives
  • represent the Commission at external meetings and conferences regarding special events
  • Embody the SLPC's equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.


What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

  • A valid Ontario Class G driver's licence or equivalent to drive on Ontario highways


KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • You have professional experience in special event management to plan and coordinate the development and implementation of a range of special events, educational events, outreach activities and volunteer programs.
  • You have a demonstrated understanding of the techniques and best practices involved in event planning and communications planning.
  • You have knowledge of 19th century military history and the principles of living history associated with that time period.
  • You have knowledge of the tourism industry, leisure and entertainment sectors, the (learned or acquired) heritage of Fort Henry National Historic Site, community and business contacts and the goals, brand position and marketing objectives of the St. Lawrence Parks Commission to ensure all project initiatives achieve SLPC goals.
  • You are familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations that apply to the work being performed to ensure compliance.


PROBLEM SOLVING AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS:

  • You have analytical skills to plan and coordinate a range of innovative special events to increase attendance and net revenues.
  • You have analytical skills to develop business cases and communication strategies.
  • You have problem solving skills to resolve a range of ongoing issues to ensure success of all project initiatives.


LEADERSHIP, PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND RESEARCH SKILLS:

  • You have knowledge of project management methods and the ability to plan, direct, implement and evaluate multiple, concurrent project initiatives from concept to completion within established deadlines, budgets and deliverables.
  • You have a basic understanding of key deliverables and government financial terms to develop business and contractual agreements with partners and service providers and to plan and administer project budgets.
  • You have the ability to conduct historical research to support and enhance existing special event programming and new initiatives.
  • You possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills to oversee a range of staff, including volunteers and third parties.


COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

  • You have writing and editing techniques to write and edit a range of communications products and prepare media and web content materials.
  • You have listening skills to identify and understand potential objections and resolve, as well as digest constructive feedback on events and agreements.


COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • You have knowledge of the operations and capabilities of various software programs to prepare your own materials and presentations.
