What can I expect to do in this role?
As a Park Warden you will carry out a variety of technical duties and program responsibilities, including:
• assisting with enforcement and security
• backcountry tripping and maintenance
• resource management
• carrying out a variety of technical duties
How do I qualify?
Mandatory requirements:
• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You have the ability to be designated as a Park Warden and meet ministry certification criteria and standards in the use of force.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain an Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA) Basic Canoeing Level 2 certification.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operators Card.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Wilderness First Aid Certificate.
• You must be able to stay overnight in the park for several days to complete park maintenance.
• You have the ability to work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays as required.
Backcountry experience:
• experience with interior backcountry travel, canoe tripping/camping, navigation and the practices/techniques of outdoor living
Technical knowledge:
• working knowledge of resource management principles and practices applicable to Parks
• knowledgeable about law enforcement and possess the ability to interpret, apply and enforce relevant acts and regulations
• working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
• knowledge of parks programs, services and operating regulations
Equipment and maintenance experience:
• ability to operate and maintain a variety of light powered equipment such as lawnmowers, boats and small hand tools
• proficient in operating and maintain chainsaws appropriately and securely.
• knowledge about, and ability to perform, building and utility maintenance
Interpersonal and communication skills:
• well developed communication skills to deal with colleagues, clients and park visitors
• strong interpersonal skills to be able to frequently work in a team while away on overnight camping trips to maintain park trails
• proven abilities to work independently as well as follow and carry out routine instructions
Essential skills:
• organizational skills to organize your own workload to ensure assignments are completed within established time frames.
• proven analytical skills to apply resource and emergency management principles to ensure environmental protection and human/personal safety.
• ability to apply knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
