What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• participate in the park maintenance program by maintaining and upgrading hiking trails, portages, campsites and canoe routes
• promote user compliance with park rules and regulation
• assist in training and leadership of summer students

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain an Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA) Basic Canoeing Level 2 certification.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operators Card.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Wilderness First Aid Certificate.
• You must be able to stay overnight in the park for several days to complete park maintenance.
• You must be able to work on weekends and statutory holidays as per schedule.

Technical expertise:

• You have knowledge of interior backcountry travel, canoe tripping/camping, navigation and the practices/techniques of outdoor living.
• You possess basic knowledge of natural resource management principles and techniques as they apply to hiking trails and canoe routes.

Equipment knowledge:

• You are proficient in operating and maintaining chainsaws appropriately and securely.
• You are also proficient with the operation and maintenance of a variety of light equipment such as canoes, boats, outboard motors, brush saws and other small hand tools.

Interpersonal and communication skills

• You possess well developed communication skills to deal with colleagues, clients and park visitors.
• You have strong interpersonal skills to be able to frequently work in a team while away on overnight camping trips to maintain park trails.
• You possess proven abilities to work independently as well as follow and carry out routine instructions.

Essential skills:

• You have organizational skills to organize your own workload to ensure assignments are completed within established time frames.
• You have proven analytical skills to apply resource and emergency management principles to ensure environmental protection and human/personal safety.
• You have the ability to apply knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
