About the job

• Provides project planning in support of the branch and ministry's Indigenous initiatives. Coordinates project activities, including reviewing and monitoring project progress, key deliverables, timelines and budgets, and assisting in the assessment of project financial and material requirements.
• Assists in the development of workshops and preparation of presentations, work plans, briefings and reports according to branch priorities for decision-support materials and other products, as required.
• Conducts research and analysis of new developments and best practices, including the exploration of potential new training materials and tools, as well as mechanisms for information sharing, tracking and monitoring effectiveness.
• Participates in the development of standards, processes and performance measures to ensure the efficiency of the Branch.
• Consults and engages with other ministries and clients, including ministry program managers and their staff, to seek input and/or assess feedback collected and to discuss the review/development of processes.
• Participates in team meetings, committees and working groups to convey and support the development of strategies and approaches in achieving business, decision-making and goals and objectives.
• Assists to engage and work with divergent interests of other Ontario ministries and with other governments and supports the Branch's relationships with Indigenous organizations to achieve consensus on mutual interests, policy development, reporting requirements, accountability frameworks, and effective programs.
• Maintains awareness of major social, economic, cultural and demographic trends, issues and innovations in Indigenous relations.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

• You must have graduated or will complete the requirements to graduate with a degree, diploma or post-graduate certificate from a recognized or legally authorized post-secondary institution in the last five years (May 2019-August 2024).
• You must self-identify as an Indigenous person. The term Indigenous refers to individuals who identify as being descended from the original inhabitants (the first peoples) of what is now known as Canada. In this context, Indigenous people are First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit.
• You must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
• You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of Ontario's Indigenous peoples, culture, governance, community perspectives and political dynamics, to work effectively with a team focused on Indigenous Relations and to contribute to regional goals and initiatives
• Knowledge of tools and techniques for gathering, analyzing, evaluating and summarizing information, and developing and evaluating policy options and recommendations
• Knowledge of public consultation processes, tools and techniques in order to assist in the design, administration and recording of engagement with public and Indigenous people at meetings, workshop and open houses
• Knowledge of indigenous cultures and traditions
• Knowledge of or the ability to acquire knowledge of, government decision-making and policy development processes

Communication and interpersonal Skills:

• You can provide and exchange information, and prepare and present material
• You can participate in meetings, and communicate to stakeholders and Indigenous people in a clear, concise, accurate and respectful manner

Problem solving and research skills:

• You can define policy issues, and gather, analyze and evaluate background data and information
• You can develop and evaluate options and recommendations for addressing the issues defined

Organizational and time management skills:

• You can work on multiple tasks and achieve results in defined timelines

Collection of Information

The Indigenous Internship Program (IIP) is designed to support Ontario's commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples across the province. Information collected for the IIP application will contribute to efforts in building a more diverse, inclusive, and accessible OPS and to provide you with an opportunity to complete an anonymous data survey to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and for analysis to identify any systemic barriers.

The personal information collected in this application is also necessary for the proper administration of the IIP and will be used for the purpose of validating your eligibility for the program. This competition, and the results from this competition, may also be used in identifiable format by designated representatives in the OPS for consideration of other opportunities in the OPS.

Personal information will be shared in an identifiable format with the OPS Indigenous Equity Branch exclusively for the purposes of tracking the enterprise-wide hiring and retention of Indigenous persons and assessing recruitment and retention priorities for Indigenous staff in the OPS. Information will be retained by the Internships Unit, Treasury Board Secretariat and will be protected in accordance with the principles of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
