About the job

As a member of the Science and Research Branch in:

Sault Ste. Marie, you will conduct primary applied research to support forest management and silviculture in Ontario's temperate forests. You will support data collection and processing. You will support knowledge transfer to policy makers and forestry practitioners.

South Porcupine, you will be working with the provincial growth & yield program, conducting data analysis and report writing as well as other data management functions.

During your internship you may:

• Prepare and write manuscripts for publication in the peer-reviewed literature on the impact of partial harvest and species mixing on Ontario's temperate forests
• Assist in field data collection across the Boreal and/or Great Lakes – St. Lawrence forests of Ontario
• Interpret spatial and temporal results from growth & yield database and/or research studies
• Prepare presentations and visual aids
• Communicate your work to clients and stakeholders in written and verbal form

What you bring to the team


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:
• Basic knowledge of forest management in Ontario's Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest and/or Boreal region
• Basic knowledge of temperate hardwood silviculture
• Basic knowledge of forest mensuration
• Basic knowledge and/or experience of conducting independent research
• Basic knowledge of biodiversity-ecosystem functioning in forest ecosystems
• Good interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written); and
• Good organizational and project management skills.

Analytical and Research Skills:
• You have analytical and organizational skills to review information and reports and make recommendations/solutions.
• You have basic data management and statistical analysis skills.
• You have basic report writing skills

Computer Skills
• Ability to use various computer software including word-processing, Microsoft Access, GIS, internet, and spreadsheet applications to manage and update data collection, and prepare correspondence and reports.

NOTE:

Eligibility:

• Proof of eligibility to work in Canada;
• Has graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a degree in forestry, or an equivalent degree or postgraduate certificate within the last four years;
• Candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNRF 12-month placement and must not have participated in the MNRF internship program in the past.
• Are not a permanent employee in the Ontario Public Service.
