About the job

As a member of the Fitzroy team, under the general supervision of the Park Superintendent and Assistant Park Superintendent, you will:

• carry out a variety of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical maintenance and repair duties to park facilities, vehicles and equipment
• provide group leadership to other staff and students
• ensure park operating and capital maintenance standards are maintained
• Maintain premises by cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, washing, removing graffiti, wiping windows, light fixtures and vents, removing wax and finishing floors, cleaning washrooms and replenishing supplies
• Utilize special cleaning processes, methods and chemicals for infection control, isolation and other special cleaning projects to prevent the spread of illness/disease
• Collect and properly dispose of garbage, recycling, and other waste items
• Ensure proper storage, routine maintenance, and cleanliness of cleaning equipment
• Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and ensure safe storage
• Maintain records and prepare reports and stock requests
• Assist other cleaners and maintenance staff as required

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements:

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Emergency First Aid Certificate
• You are able to work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays as per schedule.

Technical expertise:

• You can perform maintenance and monitor functions associated with the water and sewage systems to ensure safe drinking and bathing water quality.
• You possess working knowledge of semi-skilled tasks usually associated with skilled trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical and automotive.
• You have working knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain provincial park facilities (i.e. campsites, day use, and comfort stations).
• You are knowledgeable of and have the ability to operate, maintain and perform minor repairs to a variety of light powered equipment (i.e. chainsaws, brush cutters, lawnmowers, boats, small hand tools).

Technical knowledge:

• You have demonstrated knowledge of and experience with industrial cleaning methods/processes (i.e. bio-hazardous cleaning and infection control) to perform required duties
• You have experience in the safe and proper operation of cleaning equipment and machines as well as other cleaning tools, materials, and products
• You have knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) for safe handling of chemical solutions used for cleaning as well as knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA)

Leadership and communication skills:

• You possess demonstrated group leadership and interpersonal skills to provide direction and guidance to staff on processes and maintenance tasks.
• You have strong communication skills to answer inquiries, provide guidance and produce documents.
• You can determine the type of cleaning agent used for various cleaning tasks
• You can work well independently and organize daily priorities
• You can recognize equipment problems, need for maintenance or repairs, and deficiencies or shortages in supplies
• You can identify and report security and workplace hazards so that corrective action can be prompt

General skills:

• You have analytical skills with ability to use effective judgement and problem-solving.
• You possess organizational skills to deal with competing demands.
