The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and North West Region are seeking a qualified individual to join our Detachment. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will provide administrative, clerical and court support to Detachment personnel in the co-ordination and processing of administrative services.

About Us:

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 5,800 uniformed officers, 2,400 civilian employees and 830 Auxiliary officers. We provide essential services that ensure the safety and security of the people of the Province of Ontario. The OPP is a division of the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the largest operational ministry in the province with a presence in every community across Ontario. We are the largest police service in Ontario and the second largest in Canada.

The Rainy River District Detachment has a compliment of 51 Constables, 6 Sergeants, a Staff Sergeant, an Inspector and 4 civilian employees and is responsible for policing the entire Rainy River District. Our Administrative Centre is located in Fort Frances and we have satellite detachments in the communities of Atikokan and Rainy River serving 10 municipalities and unorganized territory. A new detachment building opened in September of 2020 in Fort Frances. The District also has 9 First Nations communities that are policed by Treaty Three Police Service with which we enjoy an excellent working relationship and mutual support.

Highway 11 and Highway 71 are the main connecting links within the Rainy River District. There are two international Canadian/United States ports of entry located at Fort Frances and Rainy River connecting to their respective twin communities of International Falls and Baudette, Minnesota. The District of Rainy River has a population of approximately 18000 people, with the largest community being the Town of Fort Frances with 8500 citizens.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of relevant sections of Federal and Provincial Statutes to communicate relevant information to the public, companies, agencies and ministry personnel.
• Knowledge of family, civil, provincial and criminal levels of judicial system, respective court processes and various court personnel, in order to respond to court related enquiries and complete various court documents.
• Knowledge of and skill in computer operation and software including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to produce court documents, type correspondence, prepare presentations and produce financial/statistical reports..
• Oral communication skills to clarify the nature of requests from callers, relay messages, and respond to enquiries by providing detailed information, in person and by phone to agencies, companies, court and legal personnel, police services, and the public.
• Ability to exercise sensitivity, tact and diplomacy while greeting and responding to requests for information from individuals who are sometimes distraught, overly emotional or irate.
• Written communication skills to compose correspondence, prepare court documents, proofread a variety of documents, compile reports and summarize information.
• Ability to verify that court documents are complete and correct; obtain missing or correct information if necessary and modify a document or create a new document.
• Ability to identify and analyze the nature of enquiries or calls, some of which are confidential and/or sensitive in nature, gaining clarity of request, and determine how best to respond or whether to refer person to a uniformed officer or other personnel.
• Problem-solving skills to check and verify a variety of reports, forms, and documents for accuracy; follow-up and correct where appropriate.
• Interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to plan and prioritize tasks on a daily basis.
