In this role, you will be part of a diverse team working with vendors and client ministries on the modernization of the public safety radio network including the design, implementation, testing and transition to the new service. You will also be directly involved in the ongoing support, issue resolution, service restoration and performance management of our public safety radio networks.

About the job

As a Radio Systems Specialist, you will:

• Provide specialized expertise for mobile and portable radio networks/systems
• Develop and recommend short- and long-term strategies that account for current and future operational radio requirements
• Develop operational proposals to ensure compatibility, interoperability and integration of related government systems
• Plan and assist with audits and/or oversee the implementation of approved or proposed initiatives/acquisitions of related radio equipment, systems, subsystems, and the applications from proposal stage through the development phases
• Assist in day-to-day logistical planning and co-ordination for training delivery with unit training lead and develop, implement and deliver other related training
• Oversee mobile and related radio systems and operational development, maintenance or support activities

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You must possess a valid class 'G' driver's license or equivalent as recognized in the Province of Ontario.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

• You can analyze the condition, capacity and technical performance of equipment and communication systems
• You can identify the nature of an issue, conduct research and identify and set priorities to successfully correct the issue including assisting with or directing other resources in making repairs, replacing parts, or devising a new solution to resolve the issue
• You can assess and evaluate client needs and make recommendations while considering the capacity and available functionality on the network
• You have an ability to conduct research on new opportunities for the radio service, features, expansion, equipment replacement or improvement to maintain the service or meet operational requirements

Communication, Interpersonal and Leadership Skills

• You have excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with different personnel at all levels including internal resources, ministry clients, vendors, non-government contractors and manufacturers
• You have an ability to effectively articulate or present an issue, problem, work effort, resolution plan or strategy to different audiences and can translate the technical details to meet the knowledge of the audience
• You can write or provide input to business cases, financial/technical reports, business strategies, cost/benefit analysis, technical standards, or process documents
• You have effective listening skills to understand and evaluate user reports, concerns or requirements to develop a remediation plan or to document the issue or requirement

Business Knowledge

• You can assist with planning and coordination of daily team activities, identifying tasks, and priorities
• You have strong interpersonal skills to consult, mediate and negotiate solutions between resources or managers in the branch, client ministry, private/public partners and service/product vendors
• You have an ability to contribute with the development of a business or technical strategy/planning activity to support initiatives, growth or operational changes within the branch, division, ministry and OPS
• You have experience in developing and managing project plans or schedules for coordination of resources to meet tasks and priorities
• You have knowledge of contracts and contract management to support vendor discussions and define deliverables

Technical Knowledge

• You have knowledge of radio, IT, or other telecommunication systems or technologies including sub-system components and end user equipment such as portables, mobiles, consoles, repeaters, backup power systems, and microwave/fiber backhaul
• You have knowledge of network monitoring systems, alarm reporting methodology, and software tools for performance monitoring and issue or asset management
• You have knowledge and understanding of system design criteria and theoretical principles
• You have an understanding of public safety requirements and knowledge of current and emerging technologies
