This posting will be used to fill vacancies in two units, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
The Port Dover (Easter Lake Erie) and Wheatley (Western Lake Erie) locations are fisheries stations of the Lake Erie Fisheries Management Unit and have active field programs. The Picton (Lake Ontario) location is at the Lake Ontario Management Unit Glenora Fisheries Station. These programs are directly involved in fisheries research and monitoring, stakeholder outreach, and ecosystem restoration efforts that support the sustainable management of Great Lakes Fisheries.

About the job

In this role, you will:

• coordinate the planning, implementation and reporting for the annual work plans for the great lakes basin in support of commitments under the Canada Ontario Agreement Respecting the Great Lakes Ecosystem
• provide input on the management of fisheries, wildlife, wetlands and habitat
• liaise, network and represent the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) with other ministry offices, government agencies and external partners and stakeholders

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirement:

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Technical expertise:

• You have knowledge of the principles and practices of aquatic biology and ecology and their application to ecosystem management.
• You have knowledge in the areas of fisheries and wildlife management, population dynamics, aquatic habitat and limnology.
• You have knowledge of applied biological and resource use inventory techniques/procedures, as well as sampling techniques, equipment and assessment tools.
• You have the ability to interpret and apply related legislation (eg. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Fisheries Act, Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act, and Environmental Assessment Act, etc.).

Project management and leadership skills:

• You have knowledge of project management practices to design, direct, modify and conduct fish population evaluations and impact studies, provide coordination, leadership and technical advice to field staff
• You have experience leading project teams and creating/coordinating work plans.
• You can monitor and report on project progress.
• You are familiar with how to prepare financial projections (eg. budget, revenue, expenditures, etc.).
• You have knowledge of the procurement process and administration.

Communication and consultation skills:

• You have facilitation and consultation skills to create and foster positive, collaborative working relationships with internal staff, external organizations, stakeholders and interest groups.
• You have communication skills to prepare reports, communication materials and briefing notes.
• You have presentation skills to make presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
• You have the ability to reconcile differing points of view to gather support from various stakeholders and organizations on resource issues
• You have the ability to explain technical information, scientific logic and reasoning to a wide range of audiences

Computer skills:

• You are proficient with geographic information systems, email, data analysis, report writing, presentation development and database management.
• You can operate graphics and mapping software and work with computer models to present and interpret complex spatial and temporal information.
