The Ministry
The Ministry of Mines is responsible for provincial minerals sectors. The ministry strives to make Ontario strong, healthy, prosperous and Open for Business that supports a strong and sustainable minerals sector and ensures the fair, effective and efficient administration of Ontario's Mining Act, for the protection of public health and safety, and the environment.

The Division
The Mines and Minerals Division (MMD) focuses on the provision of basic geological information gathering and interpretation in support of Ontario's exploration, mine development and mining sectors and the administration of Ontario's Mining Act in a fair and consistent fashion. The Division also works with the industry to stimulate job creation, eliminate barriers to growth in the mining sector and reduce the regulatory burden on the industry. This is carried out through the Ontario Geological Survey and the Mineral Development and Lands Branch.

About the job

In this job, you will:

• Lead research and analysis to develop provincial policies and procedural frameworks
• Liaise with government ministries and agencies to coordinate policy perspectives and initiative development reflecting Northern Ontario and the mineral sector
• Support policy development processes
• Provide interpretation of policy and the implementation of new policies to staff
• Prepare briefing notes, contentious issues notes and provide input on communications materials

What you bring to the team

Policy Expertise:

You can demonstrate:
• the ability to lead policy development projects and develop policy options.
• knowledge of the northern economy, including mineral resource development, and Indigenous affairs to incorporate into policy development.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:

You have the ability to:
• interpret and apply legislation, regulations, policies and procedures to ensure objectives and directions are considered and impacts assessed.
• identify and assess issues requiring policy or program response, develop options, and make recommendations.
• conduct environmental scans, and research environmental, technological, social and political developments and their impact on ministry policies.
• create policy options, procedural frameworks and implementation plan for issue resolution.

Project Management Skills:

You have the ability to:
• plan and lead policy projects, and ensure timelines and objectives are achieved.
• use time-management skills to prioritize your work and respond to immediate requests for information in order to meet tight deadlines.
• explain program policy positions, and promote project initiatives to a wide range of audiences including ministry executives.

Communication and Consultation Skills:

You have the ability to:
• prepare and present reports, develop policies, and brief senior officials.
• discuss and resolve diverse and competing issues to build consensus and gain support for ministry initiatives.
• relay information orally or in writing in a clear and concise manner for various audiences.
