What can I expect to do in this role?

Applying your technical expertise, knowledge of construction practices, and negotiation skillsIn this role, you will:

• monitor contractors' construction and maintenance operations and ensure compliance with contract requirements
• maintain detailed work records
• review contract drawings, tender documents, specifications, claims and compensation requests
• liaise with contractors, consultants, property owners, internal staff, and the general public to address issues and complaints
• provide technical advice and training to junior staff

Please note:
• This position may involve working nights, weekends and statutory holidays, depending on project requirements and construction schedules.
• This position will require extensive travel by Ministry vehicle within Northwest Region, and overnight stays in remote locations.
• This competition may be used to fill additional future vacancies.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• Valid Class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the candidate providing proof a valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Technical and legislative knowledge:

• proven knowledge and experience in construction and/or maintenance practices including inspection, material sampling and testing, surveying and related duties
• knowledge and practical experience of highway and bridge construction, maintenance and engineering standards, specifications, practices and principles
• ability to interpret and apply knowledge of relevant policies, acts and regulations for safety and environmental protection requirements (e.g. Highway Traffic Act, Construction Lien Act, Aggregate Resources Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, etc.)

Skills:

• You have analytical, negotiation and problem solving skills.
• You have mathematical skills to assist with the assessment of contract related issues.
• You have organizational and planning skills to effectively carry out assigned inspection and monitoring duties.
• You have the ability to interpret contract drawings and documents.
• You have the ability to monitor contractor's operations, and assess contractors' and consultants' work for compliance.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You have communication and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with colleagues, regional counterparts, the public, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders.

Computer proficiency:

• You are proficient using computers and common office productivity software to prepare correspondence, instruction notices, payment calculations, payment reports, contract payment assessments, and applicable reports and forms.
