About the job

As a member of a science team, under the general supervision of the Science Coordinator, and the professional direction of a Research Scientist, you will assist with designing research methods, collecting data, conducting analyses, and reporting on research about different ways that people use natural resources.

The position requires a basic working knowledge of social sciences (human dimensions), social surveys, quantitative methods, and statistical, spatial, and database software such as R. Some working knowledge of legislation, policies and procedures governing natural resource management in Ontario, and outdoor recreation activities conducted in Ontario are assets.

What you bring to the team

Eligibility:

• You have proof of eligibility to work in Canada
• You have graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a diploma or an equivalent degree or postgraduate certificate between May 2021 and June 2025
• Candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNR 12-month placement and must not have participated in the MNR internship program in the past
• You are not a permanent employee in the Ontario Public Service
• You have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

Knowledge:
• Basic working knowledge of human dimensions and natural resource management.
• General understanding of ecosystem sustainability and biodiversity.
• Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the OH&S Act that apply to the workplace and the work being performed

Analytical and research skills:
• Analytical and problem-solving skills to review, analyze and evaluate Ministry data and information from research staff and collaborators, and contributing to problem resolution options.
• Planning, coordination and time management skills to plan, coordinate or participate in individual and team projects, initiatives, proposals, and on concurrent timelines.

Communication and interpersonal skills:
• Good verbal and written communication skills to be able to write project summaries or reports, and present findings and project updates to staff and collaborators.
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment to interact with staff, members of industry, stakeholder groups, resource users and the general public.

Computer skills:
• Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
• Knowledge of software to preform statistical and spatial analysis, manage databases, and produce graphs and figures (R software).
