The Ministry of Transportation has a challenging opportunity for an experienced electrical professional to manage and deliver large and complex electrical projects, and to provide technical expertise, direction and advice to ministry staff and external service providers.

About the job

In this role, you will:
• manage electrical design projects related to highway lighting systems, traffic signal systems, remote airport electrical facilities, and other transportation related electrical infrastructure
• prepare electrical scopes of work, contract terms of reference, design criteria, and design and construction cost estimates for each project
• investigate, solicit, co-ordinate, organize, and compile input data and recommendations
• identify problems, generate alternative solutions, and prepare reports detailing the evaluation and recommendation of solutions
• manage large and complex electrical design projects assigned to Consulting Engineers
• review developer corridor permit applications to ensure appropriate standards and recommended practices are applied, relevant regulatory requirements and policies are met, and that designs are cost effective, efficient, and safety conscious
• lead and direct consultants and in-house staff in carrying out design responsibilities
• participate in the development and testing of new devices, policies and standards for the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G licence or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

• You have demonstrated knowledge and experience of theories, principles, and practices of electrical and electronic engineering and technology, relevant to the design, installation and maintenance of highway lighting systems, traffic signal systems, and other transportation related electrical infrastructure
• You are able to operate and manipulate computer software for engineering and operational design, and construction contract preparation
• You are able to interpret policies and procedures governing design, installation and maintenance of electrical systems
• You have knowledge of consultant acquisition and administration processes
• You are able to organize, prioritize, and manage several large concurrent projects, ensuring project completion to meet established schedules and requirements

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

• You are able to define issues, determine alternatives and recommend solutions
• You can resolve unique and complex design problems
• You are able to assess quantitative and qualitative information
• You are able to assess and evaluate other people's performance and recommend changes tactfully

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You are able to provide advice and directions to others
• You can prepare and present project proposals
• You are able to establish effective relationships with associates, senior officials and the public
• You can negotiate consultant fees and other technical issues with municipalities, external agencies and the private sector
• You can work independently or as part of a team
