The Ministry of the Attorney General is offering one challenging opportunity in the Mississauga Region for Counsel to provide legal services to the investigators and Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

About the job
• Providing various legal services to support the work of the SIU including research, legal opinions and evidence analysis/evaluation for the Director
• Applying privacy and access to information law and policy in responding to production requests and legal instruments aimed at gaining access to SIU records
• Assisting in SIU's compliance with various statute requirements, such as the
Anti-Racism Act, 2017 data collection and reporting, and new reporting obligations to the Complaints Director of the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency and Inspector General of Policing
• Assessing compliance of municipal and provincial police, Nishnawbe Aski Police Service officers, special constables employed by the Niagara Parks Commission, and peace officers in the Legislative Protective Service conduct with the
Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 and Criminal Code of Canada
• Providing professional advice to SIU investigators on criminal matters and privacy/access to information
• Drafting information, memoranda, and other documents
• Participating in policy and procedural review and development
• Assessing requests for destruction of
Identification of Criminals Act records
• Liaising with the Justice Prosecutions to represent SIU's interests
• Participating in community outreach efforts, presentations and committees<
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law procedures, rules of evidence and case law, and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Information Act
• Demonstrated knowledge of privacy and access to information law in criminal and non-criminal contexts
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill related to organizational reform and transformation
• Knowledge and understanding of the mandate, role and legal authorities of the SIU
• Demonstrated understanding of the reasons for and concept of civilian oversight of the police
• Demonstrated interest in the area of police oversight
• Detailed understanding of the investigative process and an appreciation of various investigative techniques
• Demonstrated research skills to provide legal services and support to the SIU
• Proven writing skills to prepare documents, such as legal memoranda, opinions, reports and policies
• Demonstrated consultative, judgment, team work and communication skills
