The Crown Law Office – Civil (CLOC) is the central litigation and advisory office for the Government of Ontario.
CLOC litigation counsel provide legal representation for the Crown, its ministries and agencies, and administrative decision-makers across Ontario in various areas of law, including, but not limited to, commercial litigation, administrative law, personal injury claims, claims with respect to Aboriginal and treaty rights of Indigenous peoples', and class actions. CLOC counsel are routinely involved in complex, high-profile matters involving significant issues of public importance and appear in all levels of courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada, and various tribunals.
CLOC requires up to four (4) junior counsel for its Litigation Group.
About the job
Duties will include:
• Working as a junior counsel within CLOC, representing the Crown, provincial officials and employees, and agencies, boards and tribunals in various legal proceedings, including actions, applications, appeals and applications for judicial review at various levels of court and before administrative bodies.
• Working as part of a team with respect to the aforementioned matters, and also handling files independently, including Wagg motions, Rowbotham applications,
Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario applications and applications under the Civil Remedies Act.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Technical Legal Experience
• Civil litigation experience and advocacy, including carriage of own civil litigation files.
• Knowledge and experience with public law litigation, including experience litigating Crown liability issues under the
Crown Liability and Proceedings Act, 2019 and
s. 35 Indigenous-related matters.•
Knowledge of the Crown Liability and Proceedings Act, 2019, Courts of Justice Act, Rules of Civil Procedure, Judicial Review Procedure Act, Class Proceedings Act, 1992, and rules of evidence.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research, handle own files and assist senior and intermediate litigation counsel with complex litigation files.
• Experience and ability to work to strict deadlines in a high-volume environment.
• Demonstrated judgment, analytical, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
• Experience working constructively on teams of diverse members and demonstrated interest in Ontario Public Service priorities relating to diversity.
