About the job

In this role, you will:
• Play a key role in advancing innovative strategic health policies through policy research, analysis, development and evaluation on a broad range of health and health system issues, with a particular focus on advancing Indigenous health priorities across the province.
• Develop, build and maintain partnerships and linkages with internal and external stakeholders with an emphasis on Indigenous communities/partners and health service providers.
• Provide leadership to project teams on concurrent policy development projects.
• Prepare a variety of correspondence and presentations for senior management.

What you bring to the team


Strategic Policy and Program Expertise

You have:
• strong strategic orientation and demonstrated knowledge of and experience with policy development processes to lead the development and evaluation of strategies, legislative and resource allocation frameworks.
• knowledge of performance management approaches to provide leadership and expertise in the development, evaluation and communication of strategic policies, programs, regulations and/or legislation.
• the ability to work with Indigenous communities and can acquire knowledge of the approaches to co-development to advance strategic policies and programs with Indigenous partners.

Project Management and Relationship Building Skills

You can:
•provide project management and leadership to work with teams on concurrent policy development projects and manage deadlines and competing priorities.
• negotiate and mediate resolution to issues to further policy making and support the development of policy papers and responses across the ministry.
• initiate and nurture strong working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders and act as a trusted advisor with an emphasis on Indigenous communities and health service providers.

Conceptual Thinking, Research and Analytical Skill

You have:
• proven research skills.
• an understanding of a broad range of issues in the health care system within Ontario, Canada and the international context, such as the key focus on Indigenous health priorities and Indigenous approaches to advancing health and well-being.
• the ability to gain knowledge of government directions, priorities and legislative process to ensure policies are developed within the context of the government's health care agenda.

• You can create new concepts to explain situations or resolve problems and to identify key or underlying issues in complex situations.

Communication and Presentation Skills

You can:
• prepare and present complex research analyses, evidence based decision making results, policy reports, speeches, briefing notes and cabinet submissions.
• promote policy initiatives through presentations to members of the health sector, the community and ministry management and staff.
• create or develop complex documents synthesizing a variety of ideas, views and issues in a simplified and coherent fashion.

About Us:
The Indigenous Health Policy Unit (IHPU) works with First Nations, Inuit, Métis and urban Indigenous partners and other government partners to improve the health outcomes of Indigenous people in Ontario. The IHPU analyses emerging issues and trends, identifies leading practices and applies them in the health system in collaboration with partners. In addition, the IHPU provides stewardship to the Indigenous health sector by building and fostering productive relationships and also advises and supports ministry partners in connecting with First Nations, Inuit, Métis and urban Indigenous communities and partners. A key priority for the IHPU is leading the design and implementation of the provincial approach to First Nations Health Transformation, enhancing Indigenous voices in MOH initiatives, and managing a portfolio of Indigenous health investments.

The Senior Policy Advisor role will report to the Indigenous Health Policy Manager, Adryan Bergstrom-Borins (she/her). Adryan brings both policy and programs/operational experience and a passion for advancing the healing, health and well-being of Indigenous individuals, families, and communities. Adryan is dedicated to creating a positive and flexible work environment that allows team members to advance high-impact projects, work directly with Indigenous partners, and enhance their cultural competency through access to culture-based activities and learning opportunities.
