Are you an experienced librarian with demonstrated technical abilities and excellent communication skills? Consider this opportunity to provide library technician services for the South West Detention Centre with the Ministry of the Solicitor General.

Note:
• This position requires working with and providing direction to inmate helpers (and is eligible for a Custodial Responsibility Allowance).

About the job

At a very large maximum-security correctional facility, you will:
• provide library services to 1250 adult male and female sentenced and remanded offenders
• organize and maintain the library's collection of books, periodicals and publications
• provide circulation and reference services, and arrange inter-library loans
• assist users with inquiries and provide information on library stock, services and procedures
• maintain manual and/or automated circulation system consisting of books, periodicals, serials and other library materials by inputting and updating records
• shelving and rearranging books, preparing purchase orders, taking stock and perform minor book repairs
• supervise and instruct inmate helpers for a majority of working time, demonstrating library techniques and procedures, ensuring safety and security at all times

What you bring to the team


Knowledge:

• you have demonstrate knowledge of library procedures and practices pertaining to circulation, reference, cataloguing, minor book repair, inter-library loans and serials/publications management in order to provide library services
• you have knowledge of library policies and guidelines to operate, maintain and provide a variety of library services

Computer Skills:

• you have demonstrated experience with computers and software applications to utilize automated systems to input, update, retrieve and search data, prepare correspondence and reports

Analytical Skills:

• you have proven analytical skills to perform descriptive cataloguing of library materials, to search for books and other materials using the inter-library loan procedures

Communication Skills:

• you have effective communication skills to provide information to library users on stock, borrowing process, inter-library loan process and services and circulation services
• you can demonstrate tact and courtesy in your interactions with library users, to instruct and maintain control of offender helpers and in dealing with behavioural issues as they arise
