The Ministry of the Attorney General seeks an experienced, highly motivated legal assistant to provide a full range of administrative and information management support to counsel in a busy, fast paced environment in the Legal Services Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

About the job

You will:
• Prepare and process legal documents from research, precedents and written or verbal instructions
• Search files and retrieve relevant information to incorporate with legal documents
• Collect, track and maintain records and listings pertaining to litigation materials and court information
• Update various electronic databases including the file and case management database
• Communicate and coordinate the exchange of information with respect to compiling legal documents and determining timetables and due dates
• Draft routine correspondence and compile reports
• Organize and schedule meetings and assemble background materials
• Make travel arrangements and prepare expense claims
• Act as backup to other Legal Administrative Assistants and assist with special projects as needed

What you bring to the team


Mandatory:

• You are able to type 50 words per minute

Legal Knowledge and Skills:

• You have demonstrated knowledge of legal office methods and procedures to provide administrative and research support to counsel
• You have demonstrated knowledge of various legal documents, formats, style, terminology, phraseology and research sources to accurately and efficiently prepare complex legal documents from precedents, research or instructions provided by lawyers

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

• You have demonstrated oral communication and interpersonal skills to receive and relay instructions with respect to the preparation of documents
• You have interpersonal skills to deal tactfully with counsel and stakeholders

Computer Skills:

• You are proficient with standard software applications such Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint to prepare legal documents
• You have knowledge of database applications in order to prepare reports and to enter, track and update computer database systems

Organizational Skills:

• You are able to set priorities in order to meet conflicting demands and deadlines in a high pressure environment
• You have organizational skills to deal with a large volume of complex documents
• You have planning and coordinating skills in order to collect information and to resolve issues during the preparation of legal documents
• You are able to work independently and perform tasks with minimal guidance

Other Related Skills:

• You have proofreading skills with attention to detail and accuracy in order to edit and complete accurate, complex documents
