About the job
• plan, coordinate, organize and implement operational components of the aquatic science programs
• track and monitor budget by maintaining and analyzing expenditures
• provide technical advice, training and direction to staff
• purchase specialized research and field equipment
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements:
• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's license or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's license upon being hired.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a First Aid certificate.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a MED 3 (Marine Emergency duties) certificate issued by the Canadian Coast Guard.
Scientific expertise:
• You have knowledge of scientifically valid methodologies, field procedures and equipment for sampling fish populations.
• You have knowledge of biological, chemical and physical elements of habitat associated with the aquatic environment.
• You have knowledge of sampling design, field and laboratory equipment, data standards and record keeping protocols.
Leadership and communication skills:
• You have communication and interpersonal skills to train staff, develop communication strategies and to present program results.
• You have proven team leadership skills to ensure proper and fair division of labour in technical staff, assign field work, identify shortfalls and determine corrective action.
Project management and planning skills:
• You have planning and coordinating skills to prepare long-term and short-term operational plans.
• You have project management skills to analyze data, plan and implement a project through to completion and within budget.
Computer proficiency:
• You are proficient with computers and common office productivity software, such as word processing, graphics, spreadsheets, email and database management applications.
• You have experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to query and analyze spatial data, record field sampling activities and create maps.
Equipment knowledge:
• You have the ability to provide maintenance and repair to field and lab equipment, such as boats, motors, water sampling equipment, trucks, ATV's, Global Positioning System (GPS) units, digital cameras.
