The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division (CLD), Complex Prosecutions Bureau (CPB) is seeking experienced counsel for its Provincial Support Unit (PSU). The Bureau is a multi-faceted, comprehensive approach to ensuring Ontario's prosecution service is equipped to prosecute increasing volumes of serious and violent crime effectively and efficiently, and to ensure continued prosecutorial capacity in local Crown Attorney offices.
As part of the CPB, the Provincial Support Unit supports major criminal investigations and prosecutions, and improves province-wide intelligence gathering, integration and coordination. The unit provides legal advice to local, provincial, and national police services investigating complex and large-scale criminal investigations across multiple jurisdictions, particularly with respect to the drafting of warrants and wiretap applications. The unit also supports prosecutors to respond to novel, sensitive or complex legal issues relating to search and seizure issues.

Duties will include:
• Providing pre-charge advice on judicial authorizations
• Conducting prosecutions in the Ontario and Superior Courts of Justice throughout Ontario
• Assisting with research, case preparation and courtroom advocacy in complex prosecutions in the Ontario and Superior Courts of Justice throughout Ontario
• Work in the area of criminal law policy
• Work in the area of Mutual Legal Assistance and Extraditions and Criminal Asset Forfeiture
• Providing legal advice to the police, the Director of the Complex Prosecutions Bureau, other ministry officials and other government departments and agencies
• Participating in educational and training sessions for prosecutors, police and other justice partners
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You have
membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
• Thorough knowledge of criminal and constitutional law, including statute and case law regarding the prosecution of criminal and quasi-criminal offences at all levels
• Proven research skills and analytical ability to organize a principled approach to cases and issues
• Proficiency with technological tools for litigation; e.g. QuickLaw, SCOPE, PowerPoint, electronic case management software, etc.
• Demonstrated writing skills and trial advocacy experience
• Experience with large case management
• Proven judgment and ability to apply appropriate legal analysis and determine appropriate remedies
• Demonstrated organizational skills
• Knowledge and understanding of the role and function of prosecutor
• Integrity and demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills

• represents the Crown in criminal appeals at all levels of Court (the Superior Court of Justice, the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada), as well as provides specialized services in relation to applications for wiretap authorizations (as designated under Part 6 of the Criminal Code of Canada), extraditions and search warrants
• provides specialized legal advice in all areas of criminal law to the police, the Attorney General, and the Deputy Attorney General
• examines and establishes policy guidelines for the conduct of prosecutions within the Province of Ontario
• provides world-class education to its prosecutors and prosecutors from across Canada and the United States
