Work Description
As a Climate Change Research Assistant, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:
- Assist staff with field sampling of peatlands, including collecting peat cores, and downloading and quality assuring weather station, permafrost, and peat soil temperature and moisture data.
- You may be working in a technically-demanding laboratory setting using traditional (e.g. culturing, microscopy) and molecular (e.g. PCR, RFLP) techniques in the study of fungal disease pathogens of forest trees.
- You may work with gas chromatography or other analytical methods.
- Perform field analyses, sample preparation, and chemical laboratory analyses, and collect, review, verify, and enter information/data into databases/forms.

Mandatory requirements
You must meet all eligibility criteria by the first day of employment (contracts begin between May and July):
- Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).
- Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit.
- Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.
- Work Status: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) for the full duration of your summer employment.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills
- You apply your written communication skills to document findings, record data, and prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports).
- You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
Technical Skills and Knowledge
- You apply your experience using Microsoft Office applications, such as Word (word processing) and Excel (spreadsheets), as well as databases, email, and the internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.
- You are able to work in a technically-demanding laboratory environment, and have a general knowledge of lab practices, techniques and scientific theories in such disciplines as biology, molecular biology, chemistry and/or biochemistry.
- You are able to use word processing, spreadsheets, and graphical programs, and to report results in written format.
- You are able to work outdoors in diverse weather conditions, and to participate in a variety of field sampling protocols to obtain various samples for the multiple research projects within each program.
Analytical and Organizational Skills
- You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review, and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means.
- You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize, and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines.
