About the job
Provide support to the Regional Hydrogeologist by participating in: hydrogeological and other water resource assistance and policy interpretation to MNR program staff, regional and district (field) teams; to evaluate and make recommendations on existing and anticipated impacts of development proposals on MNR interests (e.g. contaminated sites, water monitoring wells, waste disposal sites); to provide technical and advisory support in water and contaminated sites management as it pertains to matters of interest to MNR and the development and procurement of rehabilitation and research projects and studies.
What you bring to the team
Eligibility:
• at minimum a degree in environmental engineering, geology, hydrogeology, or earth sciences from an accredited post-secondary educational institution, a Master, or a Doctoral degree with the ability to register as a Geoscientist in Training with the Professional Geoscientists of Ontario
• proof of eligibility to work in Canada
• have graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a diploma or an equivalent degree or postgraduate certificate or diploma within the last four years
• candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNR 12-month placement and must not have participated in the MNR internship program in the past
• not a permanent employee in the Ontario Public Service
Technical Skills:
• Proficiency in hydrogeological methods and techniques, including contaminant hydrogeology, environmental site assessment, and well mechanics/design.
• Strong understanding of geology (Pre-Cambrian, Paleozoic, Quaternary) and geological processes as they relate to groundwater.
• Knowledge of groundwater management and its link to aquatic ecosystems, fisheries, wetlands, and sensitive receptors.
• Familiarity with environmental legislation (e.g., Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act) and compliance requirements.
• Expertise in field investigation techniques, groundwater monitoring equipment (e.g., piezometers), and landfill-specific concepts (attenuation zones, leachate transport).
• Competence in computer modeling and software applications for data analysis and reporting.
• Understanding of surface water management, source water protection, and groundwater hazards (e.g., karst formations).
• Basic knowledge of the Environmental Bill of Rights and related posting requirements.
Analytical Skills:
• Ability to conduct applied research and investigative studies to assess environmental issues and determine compliance.
• Strong problem-solving skills to evaluate hydrogeological data, analyze field samples, and interpret results using computer modeling.
• Capacity to develop options and recommendations based on scientific findings and policy considerations.
• Skilled in consolidating research, drawing inferences on environmental impacts, and preparing technical assessments.
Communication Skills:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports, briefing notes, and recommendations.
• Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and engage with external stakeholders (e.g., municipalities, industry, environmental groups).
• Ability to present complex scientific information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
