Do you have thorough knowledge and experience maintaining water treatment facilities?

If so, Algonquin Provincial Park, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, is looking for a skilled and professional Water Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to join their team.

Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario's oldest and most renowned park, spans an impressive 7,635 square kilometers of diverse landscapes, including maple hills, rocky ridges, and thousands of lakes. The park offers a wide range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts, such as canoeing, hiking, and fishing, with world-class trout fishing opportunities. Visitors can explore the park's interior by paddle or on foot and enjoy camping at one of eight campgrounds along Highway 60. The park also features 14 interpretive trails, an exceptional Visitor Centre, a Logging Museum, and an Art Centre. Year-round activities include skiing, snowshoeing, and skating, making Algonquin a perfect destination for nature lovers in any season.

About the job

In this role, you will:

• maintain related equipment in 19 water treatment systems along Highway 60 in Algonquin Provincial Park, many of which are advanced Slow Sand/Ozone systems, as well as, chemically assisted water filtration systems, and a variety of distribution systems
• carry out operational procedures for sewage treatment facilities to ensure facility is complian with legislated standards.
• operate, inspect, maintain and carry out repairs on complex and advanced water system and sewage systems equipment, such as mechanical and electrical valves, pumps, chemical systems including chemical pumps, and process control equipment
• carry out these duties with the opportunity to work independently or with a dedicated and skilled team, when required

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You have the ability to obtain a valid OWWCO (Ontario Water Wastewater Certification Ontario) Limited System Operator Certificate or higher.
• You have the ability to obtain a valid Class 1 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate.
• You are able to work shifts, weekends and holidays as per schedule.

Water treatment expertise:

• You have expert knowledge and experience in the principles and practices required for the mechanical inspection and maintenance of advanced water treatment facilities and sewage treatment facilities.
• You are familiar with and have the ability to calibrate online monitoring systems, record data and use data to evaluate conditions, to initiate repairs and maintenance. (flow rates, ozone controllers and generators, pump starts and pump hours, chlorine, iron and turbidity readings)
• You have knowledge of all regulations and policies to ensure operational compliance and to complete the required adverse reporting process.

Technical expertise:

• You have working knowledge of semi-skilled technical tasks usually associated with skilled trades such as mechanical, plumbing and electrical; and the ability to repair and maintain a variety of equipment.
• You have knowledge of WHMIS, occupational hazards and standard safety precautions including storage of chemicals, confined space entry, equipment lockout/tagging and personal protective equipment.
• You have knowledge of basic mathematics and chemistry in order to make calculations regarding chemicals and operating processes.
• You have the ability to read and interpret blueprints, and operating/repair manuals and follow process drawings to aid in troubleshooting equipment problems.

Analytical skills:

• You have proven analytical and problem solving skills to identify and correct maintenance issues with equipment/ processes.
• You have proven organizational skills to prioritize workload, maintain inventories and to lead extensive maintenance and repair projects.
• You demonstrate interest in continuous learning.
• You are able to work independently, take initiative and carry out instructions.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You have demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to work as part of a team, and interact with the Utilities Group Leader, and other members of the park team.
• You have written communication skills to maintain logs and reports, and accurately record information.
