About the job

As a member of the Algonquin Provincial Park team, you will:

• provide team leadership for a variety of programs associated with the operation, maintenance and development of Park facilities
• ensure health and safety of staff and park visitors
• assist with staff supervision, training and scheduling
• plan and implement operational field programs
• provide law enforcement, resource management and protection functions

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements:

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You are able to be designated as a Park Warden and meet ministry certification criteria and standards in use of force.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a pleasure craft operator's card.
• You are able to work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays, as required.

Leadership and supervisory skills:

• You possess strong team leadership skills to provide team leadership to a variety of park staff, including performance assessment, training and scheduling.
• You can supervise staff in day-to-day activities to assist in daily management of park operations.
• You can assist with difficult situations involving park visitors and stakeholders.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You possess well developed communication skills to communicate effectively with, and provide accurate information to staff, service providers, visitors and stakeholders.
• You possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively respond to inquiries and handle complaints tactfully and with discretion.
• You possess written communication skills to create reports, training records, maintenance logs, correspondence, work plans, perform audits and complete revenue tracking.

Technical knowledge:

• You possess a general knowledge of building, grounds keeping, and utility maintenance, as well as knowledge in sewage and wastewater management.
• You are knowledgeable of the operation and maintenance of light powered equipment such as lawnmowers, tractors, ATV, chainsaws, boats and small hand tools.
• You possess a clear understanding of principles and practices of natural resource management and the management of parks and protected areas.

Enforcement skills:

• You demonstrate enforcement skills to enforce park legislation, rules and directives.
• You possess the ability to apply and interpret relevant acts and legislation associated with parks, protected areas, safety and natural resources.
• You have strong problem-solving, analytical, negotiation and conflict resolution skills to deal with enforcement contraventions, park visitors and difficult situations.

Operational knowledge:

• You have proven knowledge of directives and procedures to deliver efficient and effective park operations.
• You have knowledge of work planning, revenue and expenditure control, service contract tendering and contract management.
• You possess knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply relevant acts, regulations, policies, and principles related to resource management, park management, purchasing, and budgeting as well as health and workplace safety (eg. Occupational Health and Safety Act).

Computer skills:

• You are proficient with and are able to use computer applications including word-processing, presentation and spreadsheet and financial tracking programs.
• You have the ability to use computers to create reports, write correspondence, track inventories, and procure goods.
