As a Family Life and Volunteer Team Leader at Fort William Historical Park, you will plan and coordinate educational programs, while also leading heritage food experiences to support the living history program.
In this role, you will:
• lead the planning and delivery of family-focused living history programs
• review programs to make sure they meet quality standards and learning goals
• research and introduce new ideas to keep programs fresh and engaging
• build relationships with Indigenous communities, cultural groups, and educators
• help bring history to life through demonstrations, events, and storytelling
• support festivals, special events, and historical dramatizations
• oversee heritage food activities and ensure health and safety standards are followed
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• The position requires the successful candidates to have a valid class G driver's license or equivalent as recognized by the province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidates providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You may be required to attend overnight functions, travel to out of town events and off-hour programs, and work on holidays and weekends
Staff and volunteer coordination, training and leadership skills:
• you understand how to train, schedule, and support staff and volunteers
• you can plan, and deliver educational programs that meet established education curriculum goals
• you can lead, coach, and support staff and volunteers in engaging activities
• you can guide and teams during programs and events, and resolve operational and program related issues
Communication, customer service and interpersonal skills:
• you can work effectively with staff, volunteers, and partners inside and outside the organization
• you can plan and evaluate programs and suggest ways to improve them
• you can clearly share ideas and recommendations with managers
• you can represent the organization when working with community groups and partners
Historical and dramatization knowledge:
• you have knowledge of Canadian Fur Trade history in the early 1800's
• you understand historical ways of living including food, cooking, and land-based practices
• you have knowledge of how to bring history to life through interactive and engaging learning experiences
• you understand living history interpretation and how to share history with a wide range of audiences
Culinary and crafting skills:
• you have experience preparing food, including basic baking and cooking for groups, using a range of equipment
• you understand and follow safe food handling and preparation practices
• you have hands-on crafting skills (e.g., sewing, leatherwork, beadwork)
• you can teach and support others in learning practical, hands-on skills for programs and activities
Analytical, research and evaluative skills:
• you can design new and engaging programs and activities based on historical themes
• you can review programs to see what's working well and identify ways to improve
• you can use feedback and observations to make informed recommendations
• you can research historical family life and apply your findings to program content
